which is better: joystick, or keyboard/mouse?
Which do you use?
I was thinking earlier, and well I thought, does it make a difference wether someone is using a joystick, or a keyboard/mouse? Is one setup better than others in combat? What do you think? Discuss.

I had joysticks, and went back to keyboard/mouse I find I have better control over all, though joysticks will lend them self's to more advanced dodging. You just can't aim...
It's pure opinion, some people will be better with one, others with the other. For me personally, I've only ever used KB+mouse, as I can't get my joystick to be calibrated properly in VO. :-(
I prefer KB+Mouse.
I'm old-school and grew up when computers didn't have joysticks...more to the point when MAC's didn't have any...
I got used to it, and am more comfortable with them.
btw, I recently purchased a logitech MX510 mouse, it ROCKS!!!
plenty of extra buttons to fool with. I love having my FA toggle on the mouse, so I don't have to leave the dodging keys, or the aiming to switch between FA on or FA off...

I've found I get much, much tighter control with my logitech joystick... plus I can use the 8-directional hat for strafing. It absolutely rocks.
The only downside of a joystick is that you lose the ability to look in any direction you want during a dogfight.. however the tighter control more than makes up for it.

Keyboard mouse all the way
If you wanna be good then keyboard and mouse.
If you want immersion then joystick.
If you want a challenge then get a racing wheel :)

Haha I concur with Kixs.
Duel joysticks, then practice for 3 months to get your aim back. My aim still sucks, but it's lots of fun. :D
Screw joysticks, I use a DDR pad.
Silentbob=l337
KB&Mouse here.
Actually learning combat all the way before you get teh good ships is a good thing.

You must have used macs for a very long time, then. Because if I remember correctly, joysticks were available for macs since Mac OS 7... which is a pretty long time.
on topic:
I prefer(red) keyboard and mouse, because the js i had didn't really add up with my way of flying/fighting.

Old school here... so KB+Mouse. :) Makes it easy to chat too.
I personally use all three. I'm far too lazy to write binds or even copy paste them when I can record them to a button on my controller that i disassembeled so i can mount it and hit the buttons with out having to move it around
Gamepad 'cause I'm cheap.
I suck with just kybd/mouse.
Perhaps if I get the Apple Mighty Mouse? Hrmmmm.
My dream system would be a 'stick with 3 analog inputs and one of those keypad thingies for other hand.

I use a mouse and keyboard.
I once played the space combat game allegiance, and started with using a joystick. During that time I was a mediocore player. Atfer my joystick went kaput I was like wtf now?
I switched to the mouse, at the first it gave me a strnge feeling. But after that I got used to it and become an exellent dogfighter in space simulators. The mouse is far more easier to aim with and the keyboard lends itself to configure a hell load of keys whilst a joystick is restriced to 8.
The only thing if find anyoing about this game is when u move your mouse up your ship turns upwards, but when u stop moving. Other spacegames i have played keep turning up your ship untill u brind your croshair back to the center point.

I use a playstation 2 pad, and as for mouse and kb making it easier to talk, it doesnt, you cant type and fly without a stick :) second you press t, your a sitting duck (unless of course your using a turbo lock).
I frequently chat while fighting, the person I am fighting wont even realise it :P but I do find there are one or two pilots that make me wish I was using a mouse again. (you prolly know who you are :P).
