I was fooling around with my old saitek X45 flight sim stick the other day before I realized that it isnt very well suited for VO. This promted me to wonder what kind of setup other people are using or have tried. Hopefully, we can save people some time experimenting by listing what worked well, and what didnt.
My gripe with the saitek X45 is the spring on the joystick. It makes it too stiff for fine control. Plus the size of the thing, and its companion controler, make it so bulky it takes up too much desk space.
On the flip side, it does have plenty of buttons to configure all the game controls any way you want.

I use a Logitech MX310 mouse and a Belkin Nostromo n52 (setup as a normal keyboard). Weapons are on the 3 main mouse buttons, boost on my thumb button, brake on my pinky, and mousewheel zoom. Strafe controls are standard WASD but with up/down/roll moved to the thumb d-pad. Other functions are scattered about on the n52, utilizing the shift key to double up on most keys. ('x' does sector list, 'X' does charinfo). A standard keyboard is kept nearby for comms.
I use duel joy sticks for now (logtec attack 3 and logtec Extreme 3D pro) how ever my 3d pro is giving me problems so I think I may end up using a mouse and a joy stick.
Track pad and keyboard all the way, fear me!
heh i just use a mouse with a slightly remapped keyboard.
Hehe, I still go back to the old track pad and key board alotta the time. I mean it's what works... :P
I used to play with a Logitech MX-310 mouse. It was comfortable and it had lots of buttons, but unfortunately there was a bug (at least in the OS X version) whereby the side buttons were completely useless in Vendetta. So I dumped that in favor of the lighter and smaller Logitech Notebook Optical Mouse Plus. I haven't gone back since. Love this mouse. Much more room to maneuver and no buttons to accidentally press to invoke the autofire bug of doom!
I also play with mouselook off. You can't look behind while you're boosting, but you can make much cleaner shots in heavier ships with this config. Can you say bye bye reticle wobble? Not only that, you've also got a more accurate representation of the orientation of your ship (you're always facing forward), so dodging is made much easier. Good stuff. I'm SO glad the devs have chosen to implement this. I've been asking for it for so long in the beta days. Thanks, devs!

keyboard + keyboard FOREVAH
i use a Cyborg Evo and the keyboard, joystick for turning, weapons, turbo, activate key, mission and chat logs, and keyboard for well.... everything else dur :P
I use KB+mouse. I've been meaning to try JS+mouse & JS+KB, but my joystick has issues that I haven't gotten completely resolved yet.
Aint nothing like my Powerbook keyboard and trackpad! Sometimes a play on my G5 with a mouse, but i started off playing with a trackpad so i usually go with that.
I posted my setup in the Mac forum. I use 2 joysticks, 1 Logitech Attack 3 for the left hand and a Logitech Extreme 3d for the right.
Keyboard+mouse, all the way
Belkin Nostromo n52 speedpad and Logitech MX 700
I'm using the linux nostromo_daemon, and that gives me more buttons on the speedpad than there are fuctions in Vendetta...

Mainly a Playstation 2 Pad with one stick for turning, one for strafe, roll and shoot on the triggers, and back/forwards/targetting ect on the rest, works nice, but against some players you need 14 fingers. Mouse + kb nearby for comms, and for when I bounce my stick too hard off the floor. :)
^^ Nice... that's a new one.
Logitech Freedom wireless joystick, X and Y axis to yaw and pitch, Z axis to roll, 8d hat for strafing.

ancient dell keyboard, optical mouse (logitech knockoff)
Hehe... I have a Saitek X52 on one comp... it's fine for trading and funflying... and *lot's* of custom binds... but the strafing simply sux... I've tried every one of the stinking tophats, and the built-in mouse on the throttle stick... they are just too "iffy"... so I set up a new config on another comp, and am still working on it. Basically two separate sticks (like others have done... glances at Martin - cause he gave me the idea)... an Evo on the right, and a secret weapon on the left... okay... if I can get it working like I want it to...
Keyboard + Mouse... although I may have to try some new keyboard layouts...
Thrust & vertical strafe were switched... so all strafing is done from WASD and forward/backward thrust is R & F.
I may have to try using the arrow keys for aiming sometime though... even though they don't seem to be as precise as my mouse (Yes... I do have lots of those useless keys... that I haven't been able to configure with USB Overdrive)
