Strike Forces: Are They Really Fair?

*cough* It really shouldn't be a NFZ. It should be a SF (strike force) zone, which will go for pirates attacking players, and players of the opposite nation who have poor standing, etc. Really, do the cops shoot the guy who brings in a criminal under citizen's arest?

A No Fire Zone is enforcable. A No Pirating Zone is not. How does it know who's a pirate, and who's defending against a pirate?

No, but if there's a bank robbery in progress, the police are very likely to shoot someone who pulls out a gun - even if the guy who pulled the gun out was intending to go after the bank robber. The police don't know what he intends.

1) The faction standing issue where Serco players are high in Itani esteem, and the like, is a problem and a bug which will be fixed. Standing will become mutually exclusive for certain factions (Itani *or* Serco only). That whole system needs to be reappraised.

2) The No Fire Zone is similar to the concept of a DMZ, or the old wild-west town ordinances that demanded everyone give up their guns at the city limit. From a gameplay standpoint, it's very problematic to identify who is always the "attacker", and building gameplay from that could lead to exploits where users ram other users or some such for the purpose of making themselves "attacked". It opens up a whole rats nest of possible nastyness (the "no-pirate" zone would be even worse). So, to avoid that entirely, I just decided that no combat is permitted in the NFZs, and anyone who attempts it will reap the whirlwind, so to speak, regardless of faction. The logic being that since you're under the protection of the strike forces *anyway* you shouldn't really need to defend yourself. Just flying defensively should be enough.. the seekers will get them (heh).

So, in conclusion, the faction system clearly needs to be fixed. Occasionally, the NFZ can be a problem (in the case of accidentally colliding with a strike force bot), but by and large it has created the "safer" around stations that I originally intended. Many of us remember the great spawn-camping problems, and insta-nuke problems with the earlier Test versions that had no station protection. Most of this has been eliminated. And frankly, if the only major complaint is that you can't have a duel in a no-fire-zone, well, I don't think that's very bad ;).

In the long run, we are working towards very different solutions to the whole faction issue, so this could be reappraised down the road when we get closer to that. Right now, though, I think keeping it simple is best. It makes for the least cases of exploitation (and makes those cases very obvious).

Do players still take no faction hit for killing in the NFZ? Or was that changed during the last update?
