newb alert - could use some help

Jun 21, 2005 mainbutter link
After reading the faqs and trying to search the forums, I have failed to find out a couple of things I would like to know:

1) What IS a mentor? Is it just a friend, or an actual thing in the programming which allows both the mentor and mentored to gain exp or something

2) How do you create/join groups? I heard something about being able to do group missions

3) How do you create/join guilds?

4) How do you give or trade items/credits to other players?

Thank you VERY much!

A mentor helps you out in game.

Just announce on channel 1 that you need a mentor. Someone should jump on it.

The other questions can be answered by that mentor.

1) A mentor is someone that answers questions that you may have about the game.

2)You create a group by typing "/group create". You then invite other people to your group by using "/group invite "name"". To join a group you must first have recieved an invite, then you type "/group join <insert persons name who invited you here>"

3)To join a guild is the same as joining a group, but a small difference, you type "/guild join <name of person who invited you here>" You must be invited by the Commander or a LT that belongs to the guild you want to join.

To create a guild, you must have at least 10 people. I do not remember how to create a guild but it involves providing a name and acronmyn, and then inviting 9 people. If you do not have enough people by the time the time-limit has gone, the guild is disbanded.

4)You can give money using the "/givemoney <amount you want to give>" command, but you must be in the same sector for the transfer to happen successfully.

[edit] Heh, DragonEmpire beat me to it. [/edit]

1) There is an in-game command /mentor that allows you to specify a certain player as being your mentor (you would /mentor invite "<player name>", if they were willing to be your mentor they would /mentor accept "<your name>") and they would answer any questions you had, give you tips, and be as helpful as they can. When you gain a level, they are no longer your official mentor, and you can use the /mentor command to rate them as a good or bad mentor. Players with good mentor reviews gain a badge on their character info. There are three levels of mentor badges, one at 5 good ratings, the next at 15, and the last at uh... 50? (I haven't gotten my second yet, so I'm not sure when the third one is). For the first badge, the players are supposed to recieve a 5% discount for trading in their home nation, but I've heard some players say that it doesn't actually work. For the second & third badges, they get access to a better repair module, and a different battery (50 charge, 300 capacity).

2) Type /group by itself, and you will get info on the /group command. To create a group, type /group create, and you will become a group leader. When you are the group leader, you can invite other players to your group, using /group invite "<player name>". Players who have been invited to a group can join using /group join "<player name>", where <player name> is the name of the group leader whose group they want to join. Note that if you are on a mission when you join a group (either with /group create or /group join), the mission will be aborted, possibly with negative repurcussions.

3) Like the /group command, you can type /guild by itself to see help on the /guild command. To create a guild, you need a minimum of 10 initial guild members to join within a certain time of creating it, or else the guild will automatically be disbanded. The 10 initial members become Council members of the guild, with certain administrative powers. After a guild has been formed, the guild commander or guild lieutenants can invite new players to join the guild. If there's a guild you're interested in joining, look up who their guild commander & lieutenant(s) are, on the Player Guilds page (link over on the left), and see if you can get ahold of them & ask them to invite you. Some guilds may have requirements for you to meet before they will invite you into their guild.

4) There is not currently a inter-player trade interface (eventually, I would like & expect to see one), but you can do some ad-hoc inter-player trade, using the /givemoney command to transfer credits to a player who is in the same sector as you are, and jettisoning any cargo for them to pick-up. Only cargo items that can be jettisoned are able to be traded this way, you cannot trade ships or equipment.

Hope you have fun.
