Help with the updater program please?

May 24, 2005 jakepalmer link
Hello everyone. I am a very enthusiastic oolite player and would have loved to see it go multiplayer. Vendetta looks very promising to me. I downloaded the game at work today because I have cable there. I then installed it on my mac comp at home. I have a 56k modem there. I was saddened to find out that I needed to download a 100+ mb update which would take about half a day with my internet service. i have a five hour internet access limit so I could not possibly download all of the updater. I dont really want my internet to run that long anyway. I have no way to download the update. I cant get it at work because I have windows computers there. What should I do? The site says you can play with a 56k modem but this is just not going to work! If theres an alternate link that i could download the files from via normal browser not updater program than that would work out.

Welcome to VO, first of all. I'm not sure why it's asking for a 100mb update, as the game itself is only 125mb, but you may have downloaded it from a *very* old mirror, or your computer is messing with the updater. If you are running on a Macintosh, you can download the game from here: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/games/demos_updates/vendettaonline.html
Note that that version is V 1.2.3.1, and we're currently on 1.2.3.2, so you'll have a few megabyte download after you get that one downloaded, sadly. I hope this helps.

Enjoy yourself!

There is also a Vendetta Box you can buy with a CD of the game and 30 day membership included. That would save you the trouble of downloading the game client itself.

In the update utility spot it saysVersion is current; verifying files...
This is Vendetta version 1.2.3.2.

Changes from 1.2.3.1:
- Re-introduced race tracks in Sedina B5, D5, E5, F5, G5, & H5
- Fixed more capital ship bugs:
- Turret fire no longer hits the turret itself while the
ship is moving
- Docking bay activation now has priority over wormhole
activation
- Fixed turret view getting stuck just after warp
- Fixed launch velocity/direction when undocking
- Storm exit point is properly generated when you undock
- Other capital ship changes:
- Hailing a capital ship will now stop it for 30 seconds
so you can dock to it (if you have permission to do so)
- The "distance" bar at the bottom of the HUD now shows
the capital ship's health while controlling a turret
- Firing arc of turret increased to 150 degrees
- If you're unable to take control of a turret, a more
descriptive reason is given
- The "bar" inside the ship is now the "ready room"
- Players are now kicked out of the ship if they lose
enough faction by shooting people with the turret
- Joystick control works differently (relative instead of
absolute) and keyboard control has been added
- Turrets now have much more armor, and they shoot faster
projectiles (350m/s)

Changes from 1.2.3:
- Fixed several capital ship related bugs:
- Parts of your HUD disappeared after you had been a
turret
- If you logged out and in again, you could spawn inside
the body of the capital ship
- There were various ways of getting stuck in the loading
screen (or nav menu) during capital ship warps
- The capital ship would sometimes erroneously take
damage while warping out, and explode instantly after
arriving on the other side of the warp
- Fixed rendering bug when viewing valkyries/marauders/etc
in the station

Changes from 1.2.2.2:
- Players may now dock to the Serco capital ship and man its
turrets.
- Fixed error in mouse-look ship facing indicator direction
- Ship select menu shows ships in the local station first in
the list
- Ship select menu can be cancelled

Changes from 1.2.2.1:
- Made updater show progress bar during patching
- Also made updater patching much more efficient when
updating from old versions
- Fixed server bug that caused dueling to not work properly
- Minor faction NPCs use their nation to determine whether
they are green/red on radar
- Fixed navroute bug
- Trader NPCs don't have combat licenses
- Players who get KOS by shooting in the no-fire-zone cannot
gain faction
- Fixed trader NPCs so they know where they are going as
soon as they enter the sector

Changes from 1.2.2:
- fix client crash when no sound was available
- clicking on items in the cargo list now highlights the
correct item
- fixed confusing nav computer behavior when plotting
courses with shift-click after travelling through a
wormhole.
Patching version vendetta-1.0.6 to vendetta-1.2.3.2...

But at the bottom of the thing it says negotiating update then it starts downloading this 126730kb file. Hmmmmm?

This sounds like it's probably the result of a obscure bug that some people experience. See http://www.vendetta-online.com/x/msgboard/2/10354 in the bugs forum. It sounds like nobody's really sure what causes it.

An older thread about a similar issue is here: http://www.vendetta-online.com/x/msgboard/2/9444

Good luck with that, hopefully you can help find out what the problem is so others can avoid the issue in the future.

This isnīt a bug, it's just an old version of vendetta which has little in common with the current game, hence the big update. The solution would be to download the more recent version, from the place Harry Seldon mentioned for example.

Heh, good job reading the entire post, romikq. I just skimmed the first bit of the post, and saw:

Well, if your running on a Mac, Version 1.3.3.2 should be sufficient. :D
Anyway, control-click the app icon and click "Show Package Contents". Then, go down to the app with the Vendetta symbol, and double click.

Enjoy, and hope to see you around!,

P.S. I tried Oolite, but parts of it wouldn't work on my comp. I tried Vendetta three weeks later, and it's SO much better. Trust me, you'll love it.
