wow... really impressive. Thank you, incarnate (and other devs)! This is an awesome achievement...

It seems to me you're creating an ultimate-enemy, kind of a supervillain, but also to add life to the game, since there's no large "main-event" for players to take part in (or the main events, as you said in the wiki, are "pointless"). This is about starting a war, adding more combat in the game, right? (And, of course, ultimately creating the "Big Picture".)

I have a few questions, if the vibe I'm getting is on-target:
1) How is this going to affect the "war" between the Itani, Serco, and UIT? How is the Hive going to fit into the giant narrative we know in the backstory, and what kind of issues are you addressing with this kind of "super-force"? Is this a plan to unite the three factions: through a common enemy?

2) It seems, currently, the only way to beat the Hive (or hold it at bay) is through massive firepower. Is there an alternative means? For instance, if the Hive is a collective of computers (which it sounds like), can it be hacked? Can the purpose, Multiply and Expand, be changed so that the new bot-war can be turned back on itself or even become a coexistence with humans?

Awesome stuff, can't wait to see it.

Yes, I am curious about that too... having the design discussion in one place (the wiki) would probably make sense. We, as a community, would have to be careful about duplication of topics/posts between this message board and that in the wiki environment.

BTW, the revised hive concept sounds incredible. Talk about an incentive to band together to crash a Leviathan party. Just imagine a wing of fighters dog fighting with the minor bots while a wing of Rag missile boats streaks through to deal the death blow to the mother of all queens. I wonder how many live players a sector could handle before the Vendetta server(s) start to squawk. O_o

first off may I start by saying...w00t DEVS!

second, in relation to LeadFist and Beolach's posts...
why not just have a new section on this forum for the wiki stuff. Might be easier to implement.

Finally, after more than a year, I begin to realize why I still love this game.

Oh yea, the Hive stuff will be in the next patch right ;p
May 04, 2005 Beolach link
I think most "design documents" are a little more long term than "next patch." But then, the last couple patches have already implemented some of the new stuff for the Hive, so I think the next patch is likely to keep moving on.

I kow that, notice the wink at the end, was a little good natured sarcasm.

I suppose that this is as good a place as any to point out that I've started a new guild with the charter to repel the spread of the hive.

We are the Hive Suppression Assault Force [HSAF]. Our single purpose is to repel the hive's advances and make strikes at the heart of the hive. We are available for queen-extermination raids (whether for a badge or just for fun), for assistance with operations in hive-infested sectors (including cover fire and baiting for mining), and any other anti-hive activities.

We are also recruiting any pilots with a long-term interest in fighting the hive. We have no restrictions on membership, just that you will be eager to participate in anti-hive activities.

If you would like to contact the HSAF to enlist our sevices or to join our ranks, email hsaf@hsaf.org or /msg one of us in game.

Wow, I'm going to need more credits.

I concur with Spellcast, this is why I love this game.

Yeah, this Hive stuff's gonna rock.

This is one of the reasons I stick by VO... they earn my $10 a month, besides all the other stuff (Linux client, just four of 'em [now three], listening to feedback, that sort of thing).

I've got friends who are trying to talk me into playing World of Warcraft with them... they're handing me one of those 10 day free trial keys. Mind you, I've already tried a free 10 days, and didn't sign up at the end of it. I doubt I will this time around, 'cause WoW just can't compete against the VO's devs and community. VO makes me feel like part of something that's going somewhere... versus WoW, where I'm just along for the ride.

*woot* VO *woot*

Hi, it's still alive, I've just been a bit busy lately. I have a bunch of stuff that needs to be added to the Wiki.
