Bounty System Rules!?

Apr 28, 2005 MJHorn link
I am fairly new to VO. I have looked all over ther manual, message boards an Wiki. I can't find anything that tells how bounties work. Can you direct me to where I might find help?

Well, the player induced bounties lasted for about a week. NPC bounties are placed on players who destroy a particular company's transports in monitored space too much. I am not entirely sure what the threshold is though. If you are a licensed bounty hunter and you kill a player with a bounty on them, you collect a large fee. If you have a bounty placed on you and you are killed, you lose XP or standing or both. Anybody want to help me on this?

I don't understand why there is no documentation on the working of the Bounty System and CtC in the manual.

Trying to cull rules from the message board is a little tricky since things seem to change rather rapidly as development moves on.

The bounty system is still incomplete, and will soon(tm) be changing drastically, so any rules that accurately describe the system as it is today will not necessarily be accurate in the future, which is why there isn't much documentation on it right now. The plan as I understand it is that eventually there will be two mostly seperate bounty systems, a "legal" bounty system where the bounties are placed by the nations on players that repeatedly kill ships of that nation, and an "illegal" bounty system where the bounties are placed by players.

The bounty system as it is today is basically the foundation of the "legal" bounty system; currently there is no "illegal" or player set bounty system. When the bounty system was first introduced, they actually sort of had both systems combined, planning to split them into seperate systems later. This didn't work out very well, because the "legal" bounty system incurs a XP penalty on players with a bounty on their head who get killed by a bounty hunter, and because players could place bounties on other players, causing an XP penalty, it was decided it was exploitable, and the player set bounties were removed. Once the "illegal" bounty system gets implemented, players will again be able to place bounties on other players, and these "illegal" bounties will not incur an XP penalty.

As for what determines when a nation will places a bounty on a player, that I'm less sure of. I've heard it happens when a player repeatedly kills ships of that nation that are in good standing, without the player dying.

For CtC, there is some excellent (if I do say so myself ;) documentation in the FAQ. See: http://www.ratelis.com/guide/faq.html#_Part_H._CAPTURE_THE%20CARGO

The was very well and concisely put, Beolach. I think your reply or some modified form of it should be added to the manual.

I am very happy now that I am relieved of my ignorance. But, it is unlikely I will be able to participate in the "Bounty System" or CtC any time soon since I'm such a newb!

Thanks very much for clarifying that so well for me.

What does the number under bounty in the HUD stand for? I know I'm pesky newb, but I wanna know!?

The screen shots on the website are in a bad need of an update! In the old days, when this was still an engine test, everyone had a bounty, your bounty rose for killing anything (which became a problem, as newer players who ended up having to destroy bots to get licences had huge bounties, and more experienced players hunted them for this reason), these days you only get a bounty placed on your head if you annoy a nation, for example, kill lots of UIT players in UIT monitored space, so that hud element is no longer required (or present in game) now you get a nice message from your mission computer, and a litle bit of text placed on your character info.

The score was related to activities in game, IE trading for a profet yeilded some score, killing a player with a high score yeilded more points (iirc) and killing bots also gave points, but that was before the level system was even introduced, and again, all this info has been moved to the char info page, in the form of XP points, and licences.

Thanks very much. I can see the development of this game has been pretty dynamic. I think it will be interesting to see how it develops!

MJHorn: "Trying to cull rules from the message board is a little tricky since things seem to change rather rapidly as development moves on."

This is precisely why there is no mention of how bounties work or some other game elements in the manual. In order to get those elements coded and implemented, a lower priority was placed on manual updates.

A wiki is being developed at this time which will contain all game elements and which may eventually replace the manual.

The vo-wiki is temporarily down due to a redirect bug. I'm pretty sure Lemming is tearing his hair out over it Right Now....

The wiki relayer mentions is actually the development wiki, the current wiki is created by the player base, do not confuse the two, the development wiki is a pretty brave move by the devs, as we will be able to see just what they have round the next corner...

Do you have a link to the player Wiki?
