Ask enough people anywhere and you'll find stupid people like that. Sean Hannity does it on Thursdays on his radio show "Man on the Street Thursday" where he finds stupid Democrats. I bet you could find stupid Republicans in the same places. Jaywalking with Jay Leno is the same thing. The stupid part is that people will watch this and believe this only applies to America. It's only scary when people like this vote.

It WOULD be funny to do this in other countries, though, and post some comparative responses.
Do it on the streets of Pakistan, Iraq, Iran, North Korea, etc. and see if they come off as super-ignorant as well.

First of all, geographical knowledge != intelligence.

Secondly, these kinds of things have been shown for a long time (25 years at least), on American TV. If this was the average knowledge level, there'd be no joke.

Thirdly, if you think that 99% of the people they approached did not realize that Australia != North Korea... then you're in no position to be judging intelligence.

I've seen some of the Leno outtakes, and it takes ALL DAY of asking questions in order to find 3 or 4 extremely stupid people. And of course it's the morons that they put on TV. 'Cause THAT's what is funny.

However, being fond of geography, I find that my opinion of a person crashes catastrophically if they can't find North Korea on a world map. Or their own country. Heh.

The thing is, when you think about your own environment, this seems entirely absurd, but then you've got a selection bias. People on this board are in general:

A)employed
B)educated

and in general enjoy learning new things, if you didn't you wouldn't waste time reading this. You'd spend your time laughing your ass off at the poor sap who got voted off American Idol, about what a putz he is, then go into the kitchen and beat your wife for it.

I guess it's my mind trying to accept that there are people like that.

Correction: accept that there are people like that AND that we still haven't developed an acceptable method of terminating their existence (such as it is).
