possible radar fix
Ok, I've been thinking about the radar, and the fact that anyone who shoots you automatically becomes red on your radar leads me to a solution for the red/green problem in the radar.
I would like to see a new tab under controls for radar options.
Each faction could be listed with two options, friend or enemy.
Players could then choose how they want all ships associated with that faction to appear on their radar. Obviously each nation would have some default settings.
Additionally you would then add a /friend list and a /enemy list, which would be edited with those two commands.
Crippled suggested using the following syntax to manage the lists:
/friend [add | remove]"name"
/enemy [add | remove]"name"
You could add characters to these lists using the above commands.
attempting to add a character to the friend list if he/she is allready on the enemy list would result in some form of error message, as would the reverse.
Then characters on the /friend list would always appear green to you, regardless of thier faction, and players on the /enemy list would always appear as red, regardless of how you set thier faction.
This way players could customize thier own radar, a pirate might set all factions and nations to enemy, a serco or itani CtC player would be able to set individual UIT players to friend or enemy status to keep track of who is what on the battlefield, traders could mark particularly nasty pirates as enemys, so on and so forth.
The color someone appears on your radar would have no effect on thier radar, nor would your reputation with thier home nation, which is the only potential problem i forsee, so a serco might end up attacking an itani or a uit who is +999 with the serco nation, but thats why there are protection warnings anyhow.

great idea...
actually.. probably /friend [add | remove] and /enemy [add | remove] would probably be best - on top of the nationwide designation.
Maybe even allowing guild-wide friend and enemy lists that everybody in the guild would get automatically synced to?
ok, i like that syntax better crippled. :) initial post edited to reflect it. :)
rogue, i'm not sure that a guild-wide listing would work as well. I for one wouldnt want my settings overrode because i chose to join a guild. Maybe some command to allow you to synch your lists and friend/enemy settings to those of another player.

I think each guild should have its own KOS list, editable by the guild leader. The guild leader should also be able to see a log of who has killed guild members in the past 48 hours.
ooh ooh i like
must put amarus in me enemy list.
ingame:Dasus Vanos

johnathanallan, this thread is not about KOS lists, its about keeping track of hostile and non-hostile players on your radar. A KOS list is a subject for a different thread.

Yes, nice suggestion, however, this has been done in other games, consider the ramification of lag. I'm not saying you shouldnt go ahead with this, but, while this game doesn't have any great numbers of online players, think about what happens when the playerbase increases. Checking each new player that comes into your radar range and crosschecking it with your friends/enemy/list.
And then maybe each player in the same battle in the same system has the same usage of a friends/enemy/list crosschecking. Think more along a lagfestival instead of a battlefestival.
I could be wrong about the quality of the game code/database for Vendetta-Online though.

What lag? I have no idea what crappy game you are referring to, but that would not happen here. The IFF info is stored client-side (or at least processed client-side and downloaded when you start the game), so unless your computer is terribly old, you would almost certainly not notice.
I hereby express my agreeing with the original post.
YES!
Also, it'd be great if missions could change the setting of players/bots. IE. for the liberation mission, unnies would be green, and any ship that becomes a target becomes red.

I really like this suggestion.
As for the "lag", the client allready does this check, but not against some list. Remember, if someone is in a hostile faction (or whatnot) they appear red on radar allready.
This suggestion will only change how that classification is made ("red or green?") not how the information is synched ("Someone entered the sector: Zathras is UIT")
