Graveyard of Derelict ships
I have started to get tired of the massive number of Asteroids surrounding every space station in the game. For a mining station it makes some sense. and for lazy miners, it makes things easier. If you think about it. The middle of a asteroid field or belt is the LAST place one would want a permanent space station. With asteroid collisions, and the potential to get squashed, It would never be a good idea at all.
I have read that a lot of people want large ships. We have only Tie Fighters, X-Wings, and Millennium Falcon sized ships in the game. Where are the Star Destroyers, and Mon Calamari Cruiser sized ships? one idea is to have areas of derelicts and wreckage of other ships. Between the Itani and Serco borders would be one of the best places. An asteroid field, but of ALL wrecked ships. Perhaps they could still be mined for Ferric ore too. Make the big ships space junk until the dev's are able to make them playable ships. lots of little wrecked ships to. This is a war after all, lots of old casualties. There could also be other random ship grave yards. like in pirate areas. or near ship building centers were the old ships recycled. Perhaps have one or two stay derelicts occasionally found in asteroid fields. Old "pilot errors" to drift in space with the rocks.
One poster mentioned about turning off radar to hide. What if one could "power down" you would be completely undetected unless someone directly targeted you. but you would only show up on radar as another grey wreckage or blip. Great for Ambushes or to hide when you are critically wounded. Of course, you would be powered down, no weapons at all. and this would only work with other derelict ships floating around, not in as normal asteroid or ice crystal field.

Some good points here. Not all of it has been brought up before.
It would be nice to have derelicts around, but I imagine the devs have better things to do than take a week or more off and design a bunch of non-functional models. The modeling phase is probably in a specific place in their large-ship timeline. Perhaps we'll get non-functional models sitting around, once they have some made..
Would be cool to hide in wreckage fields though. The "powering down" into a gray blip should take some time - maybe call it "cooling down". And if a ship with the right scanners comes too close, they would find out that that gray blip is a functional ship.

well, the "right" scanners, if you're goin through ship graveyards, expect trouble :). I like this idea, mainly cuz it would give some nice different scenery. Kudos, and a nice transition to the capitals we all want :).
I mentioned ship graveyards a tad while back as a way to reimpliment the scrap metal missions. I think they're just so swamped right now it's hard to get new stuff out the door.
Not only scrap metal.. but what about salvaged parts missions ? an order for repairable or funtional parts from these derelict ships to be reconditioned and fitted to ships that need them on a budget (even it its not for players but for AI and Capital or stations) Maybe to be taken to development stations and so forth...
Salvageable wreckage would be ungodly cool.
Just need to work out a way to prevent this from making money even easier to get...

This is the kind of thing that holds a lot of promies for new content, excellent suggestion !
Think of an additional faction of Scavengers, living inside a station made of ship parts welded together, in the middle of a ship graveyard. They'd sell some very rare, very special parts at ungodly prices, could offer ship mods and customizations, and have a hard time fending off pirates (or harboring pirates themselves ?)...
... as a long term addition, of course.

Minable space hulks. With the right kind of scanner (a salvage scanner or something of the like) a player can fly through an old battle field littered with hulks and and scan them for functioning items (like weapons, equipment, cargo, etc.). A good way to ballance this would be to A.) make only a few hulks have anything worthwhile, and B.) let there be a chance of the hulk exploding when the player attempt to salvage it, damaging said players ship in the process. The cause for exploding could be any number of reasons as a result of mining it, hull destabilization, disrupted engine core, etc.
I don't have an opinion on whole graveyards of wrecks, but derelicts here and there would give a nice sense of history to the universe. See ctishman's comments in

And I so agree with power-down mode. That would be brilliant. I also think there's enough call for equipment-as-cargo that it would be worthwhile to allow a cargo wrapper around any type of equipment. Presto, you can "mine" equipment; bots and players can drop gear on death.

I like the idea of seeing more in the way of destroyed ships, and possible weaponry as loot/cargo. It would also be nice to see ship yards and bots going and collecting scraps from wreckage. I would LOVE to see the powerdown of ships implemented. It just makes sense that you would be able to do this, and I think having the startup time is also a good idea to nerf it a bit. All around good suggestions.
i think that sounds cool, i realy like the idea of being able to power down and hide amoungst the deralect ships. it would also be cool if some ships were able to be repared or towed back to a station rather than just being minable background. That could be a way for new players to get ships they arn't licensed for if they are lucky enough to finde one in reasonably good shape.
A few days ago I read an almost identical suggestion to this one I posted weeks ago. It was almost uncanny how point by point, it asked for the same details for a derelict graveyard.

I probably wasn't the first to have the idea, so I am not giving osmotic a hard time. I think it is pretty cool that we had almost the same exact ideas independently. Now I just wonder where the devs are in the process to either consider the idea or start working on it.
I had another idea for Capital ships, and like the Graveyard as a beta test for the ships in the game, This idea would also help show capital ships before they actually work.
Many people were talking about being able to dock in them. And since many systems have really tiny space stations (most are too small in my opinion), we could try to replace a space station with a stationary capital ship. It would really only be a visual change. since the ship wouldn't move (yet) it would just look cool, but its a start. We don't need to try and limit what the ship has, because even modern aircraft carriers almost have an entire city underneath the deck. These capital ships could almost have an economy as diverse as any station.
Worry about making capital ships "work" later, lets just get some big ships in there to have some new visual elements in the game. Fully functional capitals will hopefully follow some day.

I think that derelict ships are a great idea, as well as the ability to pose as a derelict by powering down. Maybe tie powering down and back up again to some kind of sound effects, and make it take some time, so you have to decide carefully whether you want to risk it.
Seems like, in addition to the space-airplane metaphor this game uses, that there's also room for a more subtle, patient submarine-metaphor: ships that sneak around, but must reveal themselves in order to attack, and to move -- and are very vulnerable when moving or attacking, really ought to be very vulnerable anyway, to trade off for the ability to sneak.

Great idea, hope the devs do something like this some day.
Great idea!
