Every single turreted ship has a turret on the back except the Trident. This is basically the only position where Neutron Blaster, Gauss, or Shield turrets can be useful. In order to try and cover the rear of the ship, your only options currently are missiles which are ineffective and apparently really get on some people's nerves.
Honestly, I think this should probably be done across the entire Trident model line, Including NPCs, not just the Type M.

-1 If you want someone to cover your tail, bring along an escort. The placement of turrets on the trident are sufficient for it's purpose as a mildly upgraded freighter, being arranged along the broadest and most exposed portions of the ship.
What you should admit is that really want is an additional turret, not simply a relocation of the existing turret. Moving the turret to the back simply moves where the blind spot is and makes the top of the trident less defensible by turrets when it's not moving.

No, I don't want another turret. Just move this one. It's in a dumb place and the one up front can already cover fire for the top of the ship just fine.

If this was true, The first place you'd want to put a turret is on the rear. You don't want to stay in a combat zone with a freighter. The goal of turrets would be to cover your ass long enough to escape with your cargo and hull intact.

Defensive Capabilities of the trident under solo operation:
-Four turrets that can spam homing missiles indefinitely.
-Huge amounts of armor
-Shields (plus they regenerate every six minutes regardless of a sustained attack)
-Captain can undock and attack assailants with up to three different ships of his choosing with unlimited ammo
I'm sorry-- but that is completely sufficient. Accept the risk associated with the blind spot and view it as an exciting challenge.

To be fair, the specific purpose of the trident still seems to require definition. Inc has called it a mildly upgraded freighter, yet it is used by NPCs in skirmishes as much as it is used to haul goods. Perhaps the turret placement will be addressed as this definition takes more clear shape with newer trident models.
The trident is a light carrier and I have used it as such for over a year, I dont mind the turret placement because weakness promotes player co-operation plus now I can launch in a WTD and kill anyone back there
but on the other hand a butt turret would be great, id put an n3 there and blast everyone chasing me

Four turrets that can spam homing missiles in vain indefinitely.
FTFY :)
People have a problem with the missile turrets. What I'm suggesting would promote the use of something other than missile turrets.

I've been of the opinion that the turrets on the Trident are badly placed since before player-owned Tridents were a thing.

+1 to this. if a bloody atlas can have a tail gunner…
Turrets are for point defense (cover all approaches with at least 1 gun arc) or sustained assault (all-guns-to-bear salvos) The current (historic) trident turret placement provides neither.
(and I've always thought so, greenwall)
Also, the firing arcs could use a little "below-the equator" increase. for a total of 190, maybe 200 degrees.

-1, for reasons greenwall said.
Ugh, now I need a shower.

So you'd rather people just keep spamming missiles? That's all they'll use if it's all that will reach.
-1 per Greenwall.
I'll join Lecter in the showers that wont be homo-erotic or anything.
The correct place to pursue a trident from is obviously the side anyway, there's a tool for covering the rear of your ship, it's called a mine.

Mines drop out of the front of the ship, 200m ahead of the docking bay. That's twice the proximity trigger of a TU mine and ample time for anyone who hears the mine drop to get out the way. They don't work for that purpose, especially not while moving.
+1 for rear turret placement.
I was hating the current placement long before I have built a trident, while doing hive skrimishes.

lol... as if rear placement makes a difference in hive skirmishes?
"lol... as if rear placement makes a difference in hive skirmishes?"
Rear placement does not make any difference, but lack of forward placement does, which gives a clear idea in the weakness of defencibility from the wingspan plane, i.e., front, sides and back.
