Some suggestions for mining
Mining, is, unfortunately, the most boring aspect of Vendetta online. I have a couple ideas to make it bit better.
Add "sweet" spots to asteroids- certain parts of the asteroid that yield a much higher concentration of ore. And, if your buddy is mining that sweet spot the ore is released faster.
Make more asteroids rotate - make it harder to get those sweet spots, and make mining take a bit more concentration. But leave some asteroids still so you can still AFK mine. (Credits to Rin for this idea)
Explosive deposits - parts of the asteroid, that if mined, will blow you and anybody else near the roid to pieces. Detonating said deposit would result in a loss of license and life.
Molten rock - If the asteroid reaches a certain temperature, various molten parts of the asteroid would be released into space . If you're hit by said molten rock, you'd be dead. And to add a bit of unpredictability, certain parts of the asteroid would head up quicker - maybe flecks of small explosive deposits?
Turn off the ludicrous auto-aim currently installed on mining beams - so you'd have to aim for those sweet spots.
Bigger rewards for mining - Maybe like every 100 or so cus you get some credits?
These suggestions would make mining a bit more fun and dangerous, and make it something worth doing.

For the paragraph inclined:

[Stamp of all this crap would require significant development work that could be spent on more important things at the moment]

I'd ask for:
1) Group mining missions. Mining is already set up to be more efficient for groups, but can only be done off-mission. At the end of the mission you could get a report like Border Skirmishes, only showing how much each character mined and how much delivered. XP could be rewarded by those numbers, to prevent abuse of parking in a group to level without doing anything.
2) Add a badge progression for Xith, Lanth, Apicene, & Pyronic, and give a small bonus %, say 10% to draw a rare ore for every badge level. The idea is that a veteran miner with Pentric IV knows how to follow a vein and would gain +40% chance to draw it from a roid that has it, as if they had a specialty beam. Bonus would stack with any specialty beams used. (OMG, a badge that gives a reward to the activity it relates to! *faint*)
3) Similarly, for every level of basic miner badge, give the character a small heat rate reduction, 'cause they just know how to keep their cool.
4) Create one special "inclusion" for every ore, such as "Raw Diamonds" present in carbonic, "Xithricite Geodes", etc. and give a minuscule % chance per draw (0.001 or less) to uncover one. These would be worth 100 or 1000 times the ore they were drawn from.
5) Drop in new high-value ores in all assault and guardian static sectors, and/or make it far more likely to draw said "special inclusions" when mining in hostile territory.

Mining will be the most important aspect of VO in the future and it will be heavily tied to resources-based conflict.
For now though, without the essential economic link of supply side variability, yeah, it's hella boring, and that's like, my, opinion, ma'am.

+1 to CD
I don't see why we have to cater to the attention deficient. If you don't like mining, you need only get mining 4 to have access to all non-mining specific ships and equipment, and that can be done in an hour.
Hostile sector mining is fun and exciting, but currently there is no need to do it, so drop in some ores that the hive will always protect. Drop in more ores like Pyronic, which can only be found in Serco space. Itani, UIT, and grey should also have at least one exclusive mineral each.
As for riskier roids to drill, go for it, and make the rewards match the risk, but don't do away with nice quiet mining: It is a good thing we have the variety of intensity in vo activities.

I need to watch that movie sometime.
Anyway. The only issue I have with mining is that the actual act of mining is purely passive and numbers-based. Player skill only comes into play when dealing with the logistics and sometimes environmental factors. Now don't get me wrong, it's okay for AFK mining to be a thing, and for mining to be peaceful, etc. But there should be a way for miners to optionally mine actively in order to get better results. This is VO after all, not a JRPG.
(But yeah, I'd much rather see the economy fixed so that stations consume ore to build products and such.)

+1 to rarely-extracted special inclusions--may as well rip off Skyrim and others' approach to mining.

There already is to some extent, at least in efficiency of volume. Spitting out the most cu's per time involves switching roids after only 5 or 10 degrees of heat rise. For a team of 4 or 5 miners to sneak away with 5000 cu of pentric from a ripe bot sector in under an hour involves a good amount of coordination and situational awareness, defined roles, and trust in your team. It may not be the same skillset as combat, but hey, herding cats is a skill.
Combat mining tho completely inefficient, is hella fun. |Put an HD beam on a taur and arm a MP + aap, hug a roid in a bot sector and stay within mining range while fighting off bots.
Problem is, apart from some of the biggest high % rare ore roids being in guardian and assault sectors, and others in Dynamic hive systems, there is no need to risk it beyond thrill-seeking. The hive gives us the perfect backstory to place exclusive minerals under the constant guard of bots, since they are in constant competition with us for resources.
