Owners: Accept Bitcoin as a billing option ?

Mar 23, 2011 Mr.Brick link
(I planned to place this in suggestion forum, but for some reason i don't think it belongs in there)

Hello guys,

I don't know if you heard, but there is a new internet / P2P - based, decentralized currency - Bitcoin.

Since it is now mostly used by early adopters, which are probably the same geeky/anarchist types that play Vendetta, i was thinking that VO could advertise for free on Bitcoin forum, perhaps attracting more people to play it.

So I am thinking that VO could attract more people, advertise for free, and get new markets if it accepted payments for gameplay in Bitcoins.

[lots of stuff redacted by Whistler]

Warning - unnecessary, and possibly stupid idea: Since it is easy to implement Bitcoin in software via XMLRPC protocol, it could possibly become official in-game currency some day, which would create even more advertisement for Vendetta.

Mmm, spammy.

The site is being slashdotted ( http://news.slashdot.org/story/11/03/23/0210207/Google-Engineer-Releases-Open-Source-Bitcoin-Client ) now for the fourth time, so it may not work.

Dr. Lecter:
No, actually i registered here few months ago and played VO already, but because I am also Bitcoin user, i had this idea.

Forgot to add that Bitcoins are exchangable for dollars, Euro, Yens and Russian Rubles.
Currently, 1 BTC = ~0.83 USD

It is regrettable that you're under the mistaken impression that having registred here a few months ago somehow makes your mindless Bitcoin trolling less spammy.

OK, whatever.

Seriousness, you want to give me that in VO money? That would bankrupt VO. Imagine Guild having to coin out to someone like Ecka.

Yes, in this small universe with this many dedicated payers/players, a scheme like this would drive guild software bankrupt. Just because you like the idea of being able to play VO for free (and even earn money by playing it) just because you play some other crappy Linux game is silly dude.

This is a pay to play model, and that is not going to change any-time soon. Maybe when VO has thousands and thousands online you can revisit this idea, but for now it only works for crappy games that nobody plays. I AM NOT NOBODY AND I PLAY THIS GAME!

[edit]

Ok so I;m a random Internet dude, aka nobody, and what?

Bitcoin's design allows for anonymous ownership and transfers of value.

If this is actually correct, no US based corporation -- much less its financial institution(s) -- should want anything to do with them. The potential AML/OFAC liability implications are staggering.

I should say, though, that I find the idea of a virtual, inflation-proof store of value fascinating. This just isn't the place to hock it, and I'll stick to physical bullion until and unless its proven and accepted by braver and/or more tech-savvy souls than myself.

yodaofborg:

I think you completely misunderstood my post.

I only wanted VO to accept payment for the gameplay in Bitcoin, not create in-game currency. In-game currency was just a possibly-cool-but-unnecessary extra suggestion.

Accepting Bitcoin payments can only increase the market for VO, and allows for free advertisement of VO on Bitcoin forums, which is a WIN-WIN-WIN situation. That is the whole point of my post.

I modified my original post, to make it more clear what I am actually suggesting.

This smells like spam to me too. In fact, it gets spammier with each post.

I forgot to add: It's spam!

So here's what I'll do:

1) I will render your post Now 75% Less Spam, by cutting off 75% of the spammiest bits. This will enable it to look more like a suggestion. I assure you that we can all use a search engine to learn more about this if we are of a mind to do so, being geeky/anarchist types and all. But we won't, because that's just what Big Government wants us to do.

2) I will move this mess to Suggestions, because for some reason I think a Suggestion belongs in the Suggestion forum.

Whistler:

Well, this is not "spam" from the classic definition of "spam", because I am not advertising a company, but an open source project, and also i have no direct gain from this. And I'm definately not telling you how to enlarge your penis ( :D ).

Also, you didn't really have to remove the wikipedia's definition, since it's really hard to call a wikipedia article spam.

But i guess there is no point in convincing you geeky/anarchist types ( :D ), since you will think that this is government's work anyway ( :D ) .
