Point Defense Interceptors

Detection Range 300m
Firing delay .5 sec

ammo - 10 rockets
range - 200 m
speed - 150 m/s
Manuverability - none
fuse - variable time delay
Warhead - concussion (?)

The PDI system detects any missle within 300m and within 1/2 second automatically fires a fast short range rocket designed to prematurely detonate or destroy inbound missles and rockets.
(Valent Robotics is not responsible for damage caused by short ranged engagements)

How would this work on swarms that launch 8 missiles at a time?

Flares I am thinking it should take them out but there should also be some blowback damage if the flares are launched at close range.

Swarms I think it should prematurely detonate most of them.

Obviously there will need to be some balancing done but I think an overall 75 percent effectiveness would make them worth equipping.

What if the missiles were shot from behind? Would it only detect missiles in a cone in front of whoever has them equipped? If two are equipped, would each port fire at a missile, causing a waste? Friendly missiles?

It needs some polish, but this is a great idea.

With 2 equipped both would fire giving an increase effectivness against swarms but possibly causing serious damage in very close ranged attacks.

It might deploy only on those missles that will approach too close even if launched from a friendly.

A blindspot at the rear might also exist...

Unfortunately I am not really qualified to do the polishing LOL....

But should increase the range to 500/300m detection/effective ranges.

Also, how does it fire? Automatically or requires player trigger?

And it should address any incoming missiles, no IFF.

I've been thinking about something like this for a few months, I couldn't quite figure it out though.

The VO implementation of Flares, with its proxy fuse and short range, makes them the ideal defensive system, both as manual or automated APS, and mounted on a turret.

Since I hate flares and all that "passive" damage weapons, I welcome and I do like the idea.
I agree that it deserves some more work on its game mechanics, but definitely:

+1 to broad concept

Note that 20th century fighters are well equipped with anti-flare systems, so even stupid Vult deserves something like that. I would even sacrifice one small slot on my favorite Vult to have it.

Just ... don't make flares useless, please. But that is, hopefully, obvious.

A longer range would be harder to predict which missles need to be destroyed and at 500 a pilot has plenty of time to escape.
