mining skill-based extraction modifier?
Mining is boring, we want mining to be less boring!
I'm pretty sure we can all agree on that. At the same time, there are some of us who like that mining is boring, and we can park our moth to mine while we're away doing other stuff, and we don't want to break that either. I hope this suggestion is welcome, and gives something for miners to skill at while retaining the AFK ability for others.
Add an "extraction modifier" to mining that increases the rate when pointed directly at where the mining beams are pointing. Concurrently add a torque vector, in a random and changing direction away from the maximum modifier location.
Thus you could maximize your returns by steering your ship to point towards the maximum extraction location to get better returns. Meanwhile players who afk mine could continue to do so, but at a lower rate.

As long as this doesn't lower the current extraction rate 'I'm game.'
And, how would this look?

Seems ok.

Like the game does now? Maybe make the beams shine more intensely based on their current output rate. Basically this idea would constantly spin your ship in random ways and you'd have to fight it for control (rotational control only though) to get maximum extraction rates.

For some reason, at first I thought you were going to suggest some kind of dance-dance-revolution type system to speed up mining. Which would be hilarious, of course... but the idea you actually posted is better.
Another option would be if the mining beams shot directly forward like other weapons, and the specific point on the roid that you need to shoot moved around. Hitting the roid closer to the hot-spot would yield better efficiency. It would move faster on hotter roids, and perhaps have different movement characteristics depending on the roid type and contents.
Pretty much anything that makes mining a bit more engaging is good in my book.

Good bump; a curiously unorthadox idea for mining, but interesting and one I wouldn't mind trying. What would be the supposed min/max extraction modifier values for this? And how would it affect those who have a bad network?

+1 so long as this is done in a way that does not allow players to use a plugin to automatically turn their ship for optimal mining.
I like this idea! I dont think it should affect extraction rates directly tho. Maybe a small modifier to the rate roids heat up.
