Derelict Stations

Ok, I realize this would not be high priority but... I think it would be pretty cool.

A couple sectors (maybe one per nation, plus one or two in Gray) with very large, abandoned, decaying stations. The stations would be three to ten times larger than the largest existing stations. The docking ports would be open allowing people to fly inside and the inside would consist of large open areas and tubes. Inner and outer walls would have holes, some large enough to fly through, some not.

Maybe there could be some derelict cappies there too.

RP wise they could be relics from ancient battles (Serco and Itani)
A corporation that was wiped out in the UITs period of internal warfare.
And a station that was attacked and destroyed by pirates. (Gray)

What it adds to the game is a bit of exploration and several new areas for PvP, which would add new tactics.

OK Devs... Nahin and I agree on something. You can obviously see what an monumentally good idea this is.

Also, it would add some much needed eye candy as well as going a ways towards making the universe seem less empty as well as giving some visual representation of the universes history of conflict.

reasoning... this would require new art assets, some programming, and likely wouldn't work out too well in terms of performance (the stations are small for a reason).

Plus there's already an abandoned station at Sedina H-5, and it's useless and should be un-abandoned and turned into a conquerable station. The last thing we need is more abandoned but shiny stations, and there's far more important work to be done at present to spend significant time on something that will only add a slight level of ambiance to a few sectors for a total of 5 minutes of "OHH SHINY!!" let's move on.

Drazed... I was thinking along the lines of they could be used as an arena of sorts to make spice up PvP a bit.

As for station size, Inc has mentioned that he would like to make (at least UIT) stations significantly larger to reflect the fact that they all live off world.

I like the idea, and vast, labyrinthine constructs are, IMO, definitely lacking. It feels all very detached; this could help.

There are actually plenty of things to fly through in VO, what's lacking is a reason to go there. Rather than add additional Cool Objects to the game, I'd like to see some gameplay that requires players to venture in there.

In alpha there was a cracked asteroid that you could worm your way inside (very dark, narrow, and easy to get lost in) to get to a hidden station with some black market items. A copy-paste of this asteroid/station into a few sectors of the extant universe would give us something to do while we hunt for them, and maybe buy some cool widgets when there (what about Hive items like synth silksteel, perhaps a limited supply that slowly regenerates, this could even be done using the mission interface).

As far as new areas for PvP, what about a bot that spawns inside one of the hollow asteroids every so often that your group has to stay within 300m of for a given length of time... and once you do it grants additional trade items to your conquerable station for manufacturing or perhaps a key to everyone in the group to get inside one of the hidden stations. The bot spawn could be announced on a certain channel with the coordinates to draw players there.

VO, what's lacking is a reason to go there.

The above has a comma where a colon (or an em dash) belongs. But a good summary nonetheless.

VO is a sandbox. The players make the game.

I have already given you reason, but I don't know if anybody was listening.

Places such as these "labirynths" should contain random bots, random objects and all other things that give RANDOM, interesting rewards.

I have already touched this topic many times in my "random stuff" suggestion threads:

Fix space emptinees problem (point 2)
Random weather systems
Random jumps into uncharted sectors/parallel universes

This game as it is now, is PREDICTABLE as hell. What we generally need is to give brain more sustenance. For human brain, the only possible nourishment is RANDOMNESS & UNPREDICTABILITY.

This game almost totally lacks the ability of player to explore things. Almost everything is always the same and stays the same for most of the time. So why go anywhere anytime ? Boring. We could use something like Infinity's procedural generation engine - that would be definately awesome.

+1 OP... Ruins of huge capships and stations, caves in roids, weird places.

All those are not never ending enchantment, instead, good decoration.

The BIG stations should be very modular. Make a few blocks and ^C/^V/^V/^V ... And are not so intensive for GPU, since it can use very few poligons and simple textures. But not able to fly inside, those are not pipes, they are filled with decks and walls.

Most of the wrecks of capships from ancient battles probably would be scrapped shortly after, but in Dened there should be some left.

Also, where are the goliath cannons?

VO's focus is combat. Space Quake. Exploration is being slowly incorporated. And while people are afraid of the "unknown" that random things bring, they become repetitive after some time.

this defeats the entire purpose of the idea... the basic premise of the idea is that it gives a new arena for PvP with its own unique challenges, for example... what do you suppose would happen if you fired a Screamer in an enclosed space? As well as giving a cat and mouse aspect to PvP as opposed to the two basic styles of "Knife fighting" and distance control.

Then your answer are caves in huge roids. Formely rich veins that were extracted left huge caves in silicate/aquean roids.

Also could be very interesting to make shaped clouds. Somewhat similar to a roid, but made of dust/fog...

Back to confined space, if instead of station it is a shipyard or big factories, would make sense to have series of big rooms, large enough to hold a few tridents,.. the CS map you want, and I think that can become very fun! But would require making all station MUCH bigger than they are now, another good thing!

how about huge roids with a cave network (planet fragments or such) that have a host of high end ores in their core? Give an incentive to thread your miner moth through a cave system.

Also +1 to random content. However with the playerbase spread as thinly as it is now, I don't see a need to even look into exploration based events for a while. The verse is too big a as is.

also +1 to the suggestion of a formal PvP arena. It'll be a neat touch to have a stadium to make duals more eh, imposing, for lack of a more fitting term.

edit: I really wish for the stations to swell to several times their sizes. The small stations look like space vending machines that could hardly support a single docked ship, let a lone have an ore plant or a lab like their titles would suggest. If anything, I'd say the biggest of the stations should be half the size of the smallest once stations are re-scaled.

+1, there should be a series of intense RP stories that are intertwined with missions you can take to discover the past of these derelict stations. Battles and such.

Hi, just skimmed the thread, but yes.. I've wanted like "old freighter hulks" and "derelict mining stations" and things for ages. Since.. well, before we had users anyway. I also have various plans for gameplay that would occur there (missions are easy enough too, but I have some more recurrent ideas). So yeah, totally onboard, just.. haven't had the time and resources to dig into it. I may have cause to be tinkering with some station stuff sometime soon, so if I have some time and can pull off a derelict object in a short period of time, I'll try.

I don't mean to thread hijack, however, I don't really see any point to starting a new topic just to say the following...

New stations or cap ships under construction would be eye candy as well. Especially if there were construction bots flying around doing stuff... Low priority / after soon(tm) of course
