In flight assist mode, your motion vector is basically straight ahead, at the speed listed. Simple.
In physics mode, your motion vector can be anything. While the magnitude is shown, the direction is not, and it will vary as your ship turns.
Can we please get a motion vector relative to the current facing while in physics mode? Thanks.

This would be cool (although I think it's been suggested before).
The space debris are there in part to help identify your current vector, I think.

+1. Could be helpful.
I could see something like this being useful when we get hidden worm holes, stations or split sector jumps. I can't really see any use for it now.
Besides, as someone whom I can't identify off hand keeps reminding us (claim it if its yours ... or not) "There is no 'up' in space"

look at the space junk
At best, looking at the screen can tell me where I'm going in the x-z plane, with no y (forward/backward) info. It's a two-d projection of the velocity.
At worst, there isn't enough space junk to see, and even if there is, it takes time to decipher.
A displayed motion vector is a glance, and can show 3-d with two displayed lines.

Which is why it's not part of the HUD: makes thing too easy. You have space junk for x-z and a m/s display for y. Suck it up and deal, just as others have done for six plus years.
Turn the space junk up to "high" and you should have no problem seeing or deciphering it.

Let me see if I understand this correctly.
You have a highly sophisticated flight computer, and it won't provide a simple feedback mechanism.
Your answer is, basically, "We've dealt with this, we've put up with this, so now we'll make you put up with this. You don't get any breaks that we didn't get".
Your answer is, basically, "Useful feedback makes things easy, so we'll make things hard".
Am I misunderstanding you?
(Or do I /forumignore you from now on?)

It's a game, you verbose dipshit.
Perhaps you could explain in brief terms exactly how you believe this would enhance your gaming experience. I might even be persuaded to agree with you, however at the moment, I really don't see the point and to be honest, it seems to me that it would be an unnecessary widget that would just unnecessarily complicate things.
Oh, and if there is a /forumignore option, I demand that we get a /forum votemute option!!!
Edit: Oh Oh Oh! And a Forgive option!

Keybounce: the space junk and other items in space give you visual cues. As a new player, however, you haven't logged enough hours, probably, to be treating it as second nature. Give it a couple weeks and this won't seem like such a useful item, as most of the previous comments point out.
Also, keep in mind that Guild is a company of <4 people. Most of us would like them to concentrate on content (factions and economy) rather than little widgets.

my eyesight is terrible, and even when i have spacejunk level way down to minimum, i can still tell if i'm going forward or backward, right, left, up, or down (this is not real space, and there IS a top and bottom of your monitor, so yes, there is an up and down in THIS space). it will come with time... noticing the little things..
maybe try a little harder to figure things out before posting every little thing that comes to mind?

ignoring these old fogies, I think the real point is that it would make things a little easy, and they don't like making things easy. Because in their day, they had to look at at space junk just to figure out which way was up
Well er uh.. yeah. Either way you'd have to look at something to figure out your direction. It wouldn't really change much to replace the space junk with an arrow.
Leave the space junk, add an arrow. Space junk is nice. :)
I don't think there's anything wrong with adding another form of relative motion indication. Especially if it helps people adapt to the game more quickly.
But it's not going to be a peak priority, for now.

How about adding "junk" that is lime green so it's easy to see? I imagine a 3D plot of dots (one per 50m) would be interesting.

The radar, as it exist now, already shows direction. It shows the direction of objects around you. We already know how to use the radar. The radar already has multiple indicators, showing multiple ships, roids, etc...
By adding one more indicator to the radar, that works the same as the existing radar indicators, we can have a sense of direction, in a form that we already inderstand how to use.
