Voting for an idea via poll.

Credit for this idea goes to Alloh, I'm kind of surprised he has not posted it him self yet.

Title pretty much says it all. A lot of forums I've been on posters have the option of including a poll, it seems as though this would be beneficial to the VO forums and the devs, as people could just vote yes/no/don't care and then the devs could instantly see the poll results instead of having to scroll through numerous replies to get an idea of how well received the idea is.

Completely agree. *Thumbs up*

One forum I'm familiar with makes it optional to display results publically -- i.e., list the account names that have voted. I think this would be helpful in weeding out the gaming we'd see occur.

Instead of Lecter's idea, just only allow paid accounts to vote. That should prevent most of the "gaming" he's probably imagining. Listing who voted for what would prevent people from voting anonymously, and I think a lot of people would prefer to vote anonymously.

The devs seem to have planned to add a poll feature to the forum from the start, but I think a lot of the website and forum upgrades have been put on hold while they work on the game itself.

This feature has also been mentioned in the stickied "Forum suggestions" thread. It was apparently on Andy's to-do list in 2004.

I think those of us with paid accounts probably have the least relevant opinions here, strat, and are most likely to already take the time to engage in the back and forth of forum posting.

I seriously doubt anyone is going to withhold or cast a vote based off concerns about how others would perceive them; it's 100% certain, however, that people would create shill accounts to influence voting, especially since the numbers involved here are relatively small.

+ 1,234,567,890 only so long as adding the poll does not do any harm to the delightful discussions we have here.

options at time of creation to allow only paying accounts, totally anon, displayed who voted but not what they voted, or totally open voting. different polls for different purposes.

I would like a polling option. but many things that can be done by a computer have and where done before a computer. we can have polls now. we just have to do it by hand. i am for this option. i do not intend to wait on this option to get other people opinions.

+1 voting
+1 paid accounts (otherwise it'd be gamed to shit)
+1 anonymous

a lot of people don't participate on the forums because of trolling/language barrier/etc. this would be an easy way for them to voice their opinions.

Yeah. Voting is a good idea. I made a ticket for it some years ago. It's currently languishing in feature-we-don't-have-time-to-do hell.

I envisioned a structure specific to Suggestions, and only for subscribers. There were some other ideas too. Hopefully we'll get there.

Strat, I doubt anyone would be put off voting on an idea if we knew how they voted. The way it is now, plenty of folk offer up opinions and we have no expectation of privacy.

Lecters idea would actually actually go a ways to... not preventing but making it easier to weed out cases of one person voting a hundred times on spoof accounts, where as anonymous voting could enable spoof account voting, or at least make it easier.

And plenty don't, because there is no expectation of privacy. What's the point of knowing who voted in which direction anyways? If they feel that they have something to contribute to the discussion, they will post.

Atice, I get that theres no point in knowing who voted for what, my point is say you have eight votes for an idea.

Ryan Reign yes
Atice yes
Alloh no
Fake Guy no
Not Real no
Fake Name no
Blatant Fraud no
Spoof ACCNT no

It would be easier to see if it was being abused by seeing a bunch of names attached to 0 level characters or unpaid accounts. I suppose you could accomplish the same just by saying who voted with out how they voted though.

if they are paid accounts... then who cares? if someone pays for two accounts, I see no problem with them getting two votes.
May 24, 2010 ryan reign link
Becuase the idea is for the Devs to get an ACCURATE count of how many people like/hate/don't care about the idea.

I don't care if you have one hundred paid accounts, you get one vote.
May 24, 2010 Aticephyr link
if you have 100 paid accounts, you pay for a lot more of the dev's meals... that's basic economics.
May 24, 2010 Dr. Lecter link
I think limiting it to paid accounts would probably cure the spoof voting issue -- this isn't an election, though if it was we could count on VPR and TGFT to rig it -- but I think this would be a case of throwing the juicy, tender, delectable baby out with the marinade. There seem to be a large number of people who buzz around the game and the forums, on their first or second trial account, who are trying to get a feel for the game and probably have useful opinions on these things.

And plenty don't, because there is no expectation of privacy.

I've seen less than no evidence to substantiate this wholly implausible argument. It's an anonymous MMORPG forum. Nobody fucking cares.

So what you're saying, is if I send the devs say 500 USD, they should write a script that insta kills you every second of the time you are logged in? Seriously Atice at least with the APL/RPL we were having fun.

"if they are paid accounts... then who cares? if someone pays for two accounts, I see no problem with them getting two votes."

this... this is so intellectually devoid that its worthy of a retarded child resulting from a drunken coupling of Bockscar and Alloh.

It's not going to happen enough for it to matter, RR. In addition to nobody caring that much, these are advisory polls, not binding elections. Get your head screwed on straight.

No shit you haven't. Not that you'd look for it anyways.

Nice dig, and nice grammar.
