Manufacturing through a station tab, not through missions
Ideally, I'd like to see manufacturing be done in a tab in stations, rather than as separate missions (maybe missions could start to allow/gain access to manufacturing certain things, but then the manufacturing itself is done in a separate tab).
I imagine that a manufacturing tab would let you choose what you want to build right now (sort of like you're choosing what to use the station's manufacturing tools for). From there, you are shown what you need to build the object you chose next to your inventory. There to be a quantity option, so you could create multiple of X in one swoop. Actual design of the page is not the point of this thread, I'm just trying to give you a picture of what I'm envisioning.
The manufacturing tab option is better than the mission option because you can see what you need to gather without taking a mission, and that way you can manufacture at a station (and see what the manufacturing requirements are) even while you're in the middle of a mission. Moreover, a simple manufacturing interface would make it pretty easy to make common items manufacturable.
EDIT: yes. blueprints would be awesome.

required blue prints would be a nice addition too +1 to this idea though
Absolutely.
Yeah, maybe hive queens and such could drop random blueprints, then. That would make a lot more sense than the current system where a gun needs a defense matrix for some odd reason. Blueprints would make a nice addition to the economy, too, since they're permanent items.
blueprints sound very cool. +1 to this idea
Instead of hive bots simply dropping blueprints, I think it would be more interesting (and logical from an RP perspective) to acquire the blueprints by collecting processor cores and then having a mission to 'analyze' the cores and create the blueprints.
One idea would be to have blueprints vary by region. This would mean each processor core would need to have data associated with it (not necessarily visible to the player) to keep track of which system it originally came from.
Even better would be having a probability for processor cores from a certain bot in a given region to become a fragment of a given blueprint when analyzed. For instance:
*20% of cores from Queens in Odia/Sedina/Latos will yield BlueprintA_part1 when analyzed
*10% of Prossus Assaults from Edras/Pelatus/Bractus give BlueprintA_part2 when analyzed
*5% of Orun Collectors from Dau/Azek/Nyrius give BlueprintA_part3
*5% of Artemis Collectors from Itani space give BlueprintA_part4
And once you have obtained all four parts for BlueprintA, you receive BlueprintA. That way you'd have to kill a variety of bots in various locations to assemble a complete blueprint.
Since I doubt existing processor cores keep track of the type of bot they came from or where, the cores that people currently have hoarded wouldn't be usable for conversion to blueprints.

+1 for factory tab
-1 for bots dropping blueprint. Why research again and again what is already published?
But it would be very interesting if to manufacture anything you need to visit at least 3 stations, collecting different itens on 2 stations to process on 3rd one. Even some weird, unrelated itens could be asked, as divinia spice for build a weapon, due factory owner likes it...
And make that each 'buildable' item unique to one station, two at most.

Divinia spices as bribery in underground smuggling rings.
Anyways, bot technology is aparently far more advanced and modified than ours, and where else would you find blueprints without excessive use of missions?

+1 to factory tab.
+1 to blueprints.
Both are awesome.

Both are awesome.
+1 manufacturing tab
As for blueprints, I think they should be necessary for rare/complex items and not for every single 100c addon item to be had.
If a blueprint is obtained, it should be stored and usable whenever desired and possibly duplicated to be shared or sold, but duplication can lead to abundance of the blueprint and whether people want abundance of blueprints, then a duplication limit is in order but realistically a limit on that would be unrealistic.
