Create NPC Centaurs full of good weapons (Adv Rails, Neutron Mk III's, Gauss Mk III's, etc) which fly in groups of 2 or 3 (similar to the smaller generic NPC convoys) with a fighter escort. They depart from Sol II and Itan at random intervals (averaging one every 20 minutes or so, perhaps) and fly to the front line stations (in Deneb and GR). Nationalists who destroy these convoys have the opportunity to take the proceeds, which would be a significant supply of weapons to either stockpile or sell.
A mission could be created tipping off pilots about the expected departure times of the convoys, though the system should be flexible enough to allow pilots to simply infiltrate enemy space and destroy the convoys without taking a mission.
To add even more depth to this system, weapons prices for stations in Deneb and GR should increase after a certain percentage of the weapons deliveries are interdicted, and high-end weapons should actually go out of stock if a certain critical percentage of the convoys are interdicted. This part is optional, but would be nice.
The convoys could broadcast a distress call on System chat so that any friendly pilots in the system can attempt to defend them.
Finally, in order to facilitate this and other types of interdiction sorties, the wormhole turrets in Deneb, Eo, GR, and Betheshee should either be removed or severely nerfed. Part of the reason that we don't have very many people engaging in nationalist activities is that if you dare to stick your nose into enemy territory you will probably get insta-pwned by missile turrets. It's simply more fun if you can get a couple of guys and sneak into enemy space to wreck havoc for a while. Obviously the strike forces should remain as they are now, and should actively hunt down anyone who fires on one of the convoys.

I'm Smaug the Terrible and I approve of this message.
A major (from the Dev's perspective) problem with this is Eo. What dumbassed smurf stuck a capital system right next to a war zone?
The Capital System Turrets exist to keep big scary bad guys out of the newbie starting systems; newbs don't start in Eo, so this shouldn't be a problem.
And yeah, seriously, what dumbassed smurf stuck a capital system right next to a war zone?

Love it. What would make it even cooler is if every cu of weapons that doesn't make it would be subtracted from the reinforcement count of the convoy's nation's next large skirmish.
Sounds like a good idea.
Not too sure about removing the turrets though, although I see the need for being able to "sneak" past the defences. Rather, remove the turrets in the other end of the chain, not that much reason to defend against grey to the same extent as in the contested zone. Then you would have to keep a low profile up to the capitol system (and yes, it is a bloody long way but it should have its own reward) and maybe be forced to have someone with a repair/cargo ship. Damn, more content... Maybe we'll end up with a real MMORPG some day:)
As far as I recall, it was the warzone that came to Eo, not the other way around. Ask the South Koreans how that feels:)

They were asking for it! Do NOT fuck around with the Dear Leader!
Herrrrrooo, what was I thinking? Sowwy Sir:)

The problem is that with the current turret arrangement, that isn't possible.

Au contraire. You would just have to team up with some lowlife you don't like. Such as a UIT person... I kinda like the turrets, makes sense to have defences on your border.
makes sense to have defences on your border.
Yes, but not defenses that are considerably more powerful than those mounted by even the highest-class military vessels. The border turrets are not currently a form of defense against any sort of RP enemy; they are explicitly designed to keep potentially hostile players away from newbies. If the border turrets shot normal stingrays and capgauss, and could reasonably be destroyed by a few light energy fighters, and took a while to respawn, your point would stand.

+1 on all counts.
Also +1 to moving border defenses to stations. I would support leaving some token turrets or a constant military patrol on borders (maybe a HVC or two with a fighter swarm, assorted other cappies - it's an active warzone after all) which would serve to force infiltrating players to at least go through the formality of ditching their pursuit.

I assume you meant HAC. That's a really good idea.

yeah, you might be right on the turrets ladron. While I haven't had any problems with the turrets (as a pacifist, I am universally on a good standing with people), they seem a bit overgunned.
In my view, the contested zone would be swarming with H-K teams, infiltration teams, major scale combat patrols and only have limited semi-passive defences like turrets. Otherwise the zone becomes more like a wall as the one dividing East and West Germany in ye olden days. I am assuming (and I know that assumption is the mother of all XXXX-ups) that the devs are not planning on having Deneb turn into VO's version of the Cold War.

Currently the Cold War is the only way to describe the conflict in Deneb. Both sides cautiously poke each other every so often, but no one really advances or retreats in any significant way. I love your view of the contested zone; that's exactly how I envision that it should be as well. I see this suggestion as a small step in that direction.

Another CtC mission, but in nation space?
How would faction standing be affected by this?
This seems very close to a privateering mission... ideal for gray pilots...

privateering, One of the most honourable and time-proven tools of war:)
and unfortunately I agree ladron...

I kinda agree with ladron about the turrets, but the op is great.
The turrets, should from an rp standpoint (now that we have the magic safe zones for newbs in the starting sectors) be designed to stop military incursions, which aren't viable without capitol ships as at least a forward operating base for fighters. The uber missiles should be changed to a quad stingray mount, with say 40x the normal total ammo. When they are empty an unarmed but shielded Revenant comes out and reloads them by sitting next to them for say 15 seconds.

HAC, yes. For some reason I can't freaking get HVC out of my head - this might be a leftover neuron from Homeworld that just won't die.

Not at all.
