A new powercell idea, and an idea on how railguns work ingame

May 13, 2009 FusionBurn link
First, the super-heavy powercell. I came up with the idea when I thought about how un-usefull a quadrail is for pirating anything bigger than an atlas.. The extra stored power would let me or any other quad-railer get off 2 volleys while still turboing.

5/4/-/4/- 500pk badge
1000 capacity (2 quad rail rounds + some extra energy spent turboing after the target)
40/sec recharge (maybe 35/sec to make it less powerfull?)
400kg (maybe more?)
16 Grid (intended primarily for 4x adv rail use)

So, with 4x adv rails and an orion hornet, I'd be able to fire off a round, turbo for a bit while I line up again, and then fire off again.

Second is something I just thought of.. Railgun variants with onboard charge-storage. The onboard caps would store enough energy for 1 shot and recharge from powercell recharge... So I could mount 4 charged-adv rails and a heavy cell, charge up the railgun caps, wait for the heavy cell to recharge, and wait to ambush someone. The stored charge would probably go away on jumps just like normal powercell charge does..
I realize having BOTH onboard-railgun powerstorage and the super-heavy would be pretty crazy, so probably only one or the other.. Add an extra 100kg to each chargeable-railgun variant to account for the capacitor storage?

Comments Wanted, if it's too unbalancing say so, ect ect

Would negate the grid effect for starters.

500 pk's? what does that have to do with batteries? Not that realistic at all.

We used to have the Charge Cannon, which had some things in common with this.

blacknet: The 500pks is because that's also what's needed to get adv rails, which are the weapon I intend this to be used with.

Spidey: Your heavy powercells are cool, but their mass means they would not be that effective in chases. This would be a lighter but much slower-recharging version of one of your heavy cells.
Maybe this one would be a faction variant of your Heavy mk3
'Corvus modified the now-common heavy mk3 powercell to be better used with a railgun-based interceptor platform. Recharge rate was traded for decreased mass and a higher capacity to allow multiple shots while still being light enough to catch up with the target' ect ect

I just think something that would make a quad-rail usable as a short-range 'heavy interceptor' sort of ship would open up more possibilities for chasing off a speedy opposition.. or shooting down that pesky swarm Centaur before in infiturbos away (ok. I know there are better ways to do that (ie energy warthogs) but I like railguns and would like to see them usable on the heavier infiturbo run-away ships.

The much slower recharge also means that this ultra-high-capacity powercell would be near useless in any other situation (except maybe as an energy tank sort of thing... could see this used for knocking out sheilds with energy ragnaroks?)

@Whistler: We do have charge cannons, I'd just like to see that functionality to store up shot energy integrated into railguns.

I like this cell. Could make rails a viable hunting tool.

Approved

Quad rails can't catch up to anything even with this powercell.

Who said this would make a quad-rail accelerate faster? I said this would just be better acceleration-wise than a ship with your heavy mk3 cell mounted on it. It's supposed to be combined with a quad-adv-rail hornet to make an effective ambush-killing tool.

Have you ever played this game when quad-rail hornets were possible? I remember when they first became so, and FurBall would hide out and just snipe all day long. Not the most amusing of weapons, that.

[stamp of one-hit-kills from fighter to fighter are boring]™

What? A quad-rail hornet isn;t a fighter.. and quad-rail hornets are still possible. I fly a hornet with 4 adv rails alot of the time when I feel like mixing up the ship I'm flying..

what does "ect ect" mean?

I think it's short for "et cetera," which I don;t know the literal meaning of. But in this case it means I think a better/longer description would be made up.

Whistler - The Charge Cannon is gone?!? noes!

Off-Topic: It should be etc. It does stand for et cetera and literally means 'and other (things)'.

On-Topic: I like the idea. But I don't think the Charge Cannon came close to what is being suggested here. I can count the people who successfully used it on one hand, with fingers to spare.
