Radar Ranges
I don't know if this has already been suggested before, but maybe heavy ships should have a longer range than light ships. It only seems logical that a larger ship would be equipped with a more powerful range radar, while a smaller ship would be limited to a dinky small radar with a limited range. It would give traders an advantage to help avoid pirates. But on the other hand pirates can hire a buddy with a big ship to serve as a sort of radar ship too.
Perhaps you should be able to buy a radar booster which takes up a small port? To be honest i really think ships need mod ports as well, or maybe just a weight limit, and you can fit what you like...
i like it, attack ships need to be just that, bare bones weapons platforms, no fancy electronics, while larger ships on the other hand need to have advanced electronic radar, prox warning, and dare a say an auto pilot.
I would love to see the day when pirates need to actually plan to get a kill, and make trading more profitable and survivable experience. varied radar ranges could very well do that.

Top shout arolte!
Maybe even have varying radar power for variuos ships. This could add to ship purchase consideration. This way the valk radar could stay above all fighter craft, keeping it special ;)
NOTE: For the record, i do not own a valk, I havn't been to s18 since i created the pixelmasochist char...
Oh, hang on a mo, what about the fact that you can still see ships when they have passed your radar capabilities (i'm sure i'm not the only one who can do this...)
hmmmm, the ship maybe in view but it's not identifiable until radar range is reached. Okay, that's solved my little problem ;)

/me agrees enthusiastically
Also, Radar Line of Sight would send /me into Satori bliss.

<sarcasm>Hah, right! Let's give the Valk even more of an advantage.</sarcasm>

I mean just above the average fighter range no where near as high as the freighters...
E.G.
Avg fighter range = 600
Valk = 800
Not too much, but enough to keep it up. It's supposed to be an advanced ship after all

Why? I think the opposite would be better. The non-specials are already weak as hell. There's no need to nerf 'em down more by giving the Valks a higher radar range.
great idea, Arolte, I like it very much. Perhaps even "toplist" should reflect ships that you can see on radar. And I strongly disagree that valk should have better radar than say vulture. It would be better to have long range radars available to heavy slow ships only. Be it bomber or tradeship.
Okay, i've thought this through and your right, the last thing my vult needs is a tri s/f valk jockey knowing about me before i know about him...
Hmmm. Great idea arolte. How does this sound?
manuverability/radar range
low/3km
med/2km
high/1km
valk/800m
But let ships target things that are less than 2 x (radar range) meters away (but make select closest hostile not work above radar range).

hmm...sure could work as you could say that the powerplant of the ship has only that mutch power..however a ship with low or none radar should also then have a very low radar signature...or the entire point with radar is gone.."go get the ship with the biggest radar and you will be king of the hill"duh..that would destroy the game...if a player can shut down the radar so should the radar signature dimminish so even though on say 3000 meters you cant see him...however he cant use the radar to track you..only try track you with his eyes..With this all autofeatures like autoaim and seeking missiles be deaktivated as they are radar dependent to get a lock.
a ship turboing would be easier to find on radar because of massive amounts of energy being used, a ship running a radar would be easy to find because it is actively searching for ships, etc...
add a featur to all ships to be able to buy a new radar...make it like a small port and a large port...the smaller it is, the harder it is for ppl to track you down...the bigger and stronger it is the easier it is for others and you to track ppl down as well.
