The Black Market of Illegal Ships

Sep 26, 2008 stackman122 link
First let me credit my inspiration:
http://www.vendetta-online.com/x/msgboard/3/19726#246941

I propose the ability for ships to dock with other ships be added to the VO 'verse. This would allow for several things:

1) As mentioned in the above thread, ship-docking could facilitate reloading of limited ammo weapons

2) It could also allow for players to sell their ship to other players. I could sell my SuperLight for a couple mil!

3) Your suggestions!

Eh, EV Nova wins over VO yet again.

Think we had something about black market in suggestions before /too lazy to search/ but... one can dream that one day in the distant future VO players will be able to buy Corvus modified variants of all VO ships on a black market in Odia.

Player to player ship sales is not a good idea.
At the moment we don't even have a realistic faction system and even when/if/maybe/soon/ finally it gets implemented, that kind of sales would kill it instantly. I can see players exploiting it till the cows come home...
Yet again you would have Serco in valks, Itani in proms and UIT in everything money can buy.

You would also have players trading a comodity with some actual utility.

We used to have a black market of sorts in Sector 18. You could purchase a valk/prom/maud without being blue/red/yellow respectively, but it cost quite a large amount when considering the value of credits.

They should bring that back!

Bojan, you say this is a bad idea because of exploitation. How exactly--that I may try to work around it--would something like this suffer exploits?

I see the potential for players to create a more player-driven economy. The more interaction there is in an economy by people as opposed to code, the more realistic it becomes, and the less work the devs have to do to replicate a believable model.

Keep the ideas coming, and if anyone thinks of the major holes in this idea, please point them out so that we may discard that which simply cannot work.

It would kill the visual/physical distinction between factions, of which Vendetta already has next to none. If it were to happen in any form, it would have to only involve "generic" ships. It could be passable for pilots to be selling their centaurs and vult mk IV's, but selling Faction variants could really hurt the game. Part of the faction redux that has been in the works for so long is actually intended to fix the occurrence of Itani flying proms and serco flying Valks, etc.

I don't think it would hurt the game...it's just another aspect of trade. A dark aspect of trade. However, it should be discouraged since it is basically industrial espionage/treason.

The ships should be expensive and extremely so. The seller should take a massive faction hit the first time they sell a nation ship to a non-national, a bigger hit the second time and KoS the third time.

This would discourage the sale of nation ships but not outright ban the sales.

I guess I can see where your coming from. I would still push against selling faction variants though, or at least nation variants. My impression was that they were supposed to be top of the line military ships that required high levels and high faction. If they were to get sold every so often, it would seem to me like a U.S. pilot selling an F-22. When it comes to high end military equipment, you don't even see it being traded amongst allied nations.
Sep 29, 2008 stackman122 link
SOLUTION: If you buy a ship of another nation, it will not fly. And the self destruct will initiate 15 seconds after the transfer. This will stop high-end military grade ships from falling into unworthy hands. For other ships I have proposed that you only be able buy a few levels above your current licenses.

As to faction hits, anyone who sells a ship in monitored space will need to suffer some consequence as a result of their unlawful activities. This will effectively confine the black market to gray space where it belongs.

And while this may be a different idea, it could help here: In nation space, it would make sense for nation convoys to patrol space to verify that their laws are being followed. A HAC or two in Serco and Itani space with a contingent of fighters could hail passing pilots asking them to submit to a standard screening. Each nation would have items that they would not allow, the Itani might not allow Serco Ale for example. And in UIT space a couple frigates. The UIT being a money-driven society might be able to 'overlook' some cargos: the pilot would have the option to type "/bribe 'amount' " when hailed to prevent the discovery of corvus holo-disks and the like (bribes would have to be large, the smaller they are on some arbitrary scale, the higher chance for the 'bribee' to reject it and confiscate your cargo).

It would add a new level to highly lucrative trade, and make smuggling an actual career.

Hope that fills some holes, and doesn't create too many more.

Incarnate, would you care to weigh in on this?
Dec 18, 2008 stackman122 link
Well, it has been a few months, but I was thinking about smuggling options and motivations within the game and this old thread came back to me. With more players in-game and on the boards, I would like to know if this strikes interest in anyone.

Let it rip!

Maybe the ship in question should only be flyable if you are admired by the corresponding nation. The only way to fly a prom is to be Serco Admired. The only way to fly a Valk is to be itani admired ...

How does one transfer a ship? Can we see Moths being able to hold a ship?

/waits for assembling suggestion
Dec 19, 2008 Armonia link
heh, i dont think a moth will be able to carry a ship, but maybe when the devs introduce capships ...
Dec 20, 2008 stackman122 link
Docking one ship with another would facilitate several things:

1) the transfer of goods and money would be available in an easy-to-use interface

2) should the players opt, the interface would also allow one player to purchase the ship of the other for straight trade

Hence, you make the switch after money is rendered and fly away in the other player's ship. Easy.

Noted this should not be done in gray space (b-8) without severe precautions. And there should be a safety built in that would switch the players' ships upon payment to get rid of any "he ran off with his ship and my money" arguments. And yes, due to size, a moth could carry a small ship or two (SLs, IBGs, and the like).

u can dock with cappies no?
Dec 20, 2008 Armonia link
yes silly, i am talking about player caps
Dec 21, 2008 JestatisBess link
I love this idea. Right now i can only sell weapons but it would be great if i could sell ships out of a cap ship.
Dec 21, 2008 stackman122 link
Let me first clarify, I am proposing the ability for all current player ships to be able to dock with one another; and in the future, for the larger ships (moths) to be able to carry smaller ships.
