Hi
Can we have a VO client user interface in French ? and in German ? and in Spanish ?
My suggestion is simple enough, maybe easy, maybe complex (depending on design decisions).
What I'm thinking is all the tabs in the station interface being relabeled and all the missions, starting with the training missions and the standard missions, being translated.
What I'm wondering is if the first part would even be possible for users to do themselves by skinning. I know we can skin the HUD and station interface. Can we skin it to the point of translation ? The missions, on the other hand, will just have to be translated in PCC to identical missions (new wording).
Or perhaps the design / architecture makes this too complex and messy to do. I do not advocate distracting scarce Dev time for a small incremental improvement in market appeal. If it's gonna happen, let it be users (skins and PCC).
Your thoughts ?

no the text in the Ui is not skinable
to do this a plug would prolly do the job

Would a Dev care to comment if this will be
- possible for the community (piece of cake)
- possible, but requires minor tweaking by Devs first
- impossible - precluded by design / architecture

anyways the translation part of the hud stuff is easy but i dont really see the point mebbe a french tutorial would be of great use
two points:
a) like you really need a dev to tell you you're a dumbass when pretty much any newb can tell you the same
b) like any frenchie rich enough to buy a computer will have trouble figuring out what the "repair" button does.
PS: like, ur mom!

heheh ;)
The cake is a lie.
The client does most of the text so a plugin could theoretically be made for other languages, but there are some server messages that are sent directly to the client that wouldn't be translated.
All mission text is server-side so that wouldn't be translated either.

im wondering if it would be easy to make a french vo client that gets french text off the server or maybe just a french tutorial :)
Lets translate everything to GTS.
^---- Yes please.
that would be interesting but would cost vo half its population and it would prevent it from getting any new members :P
unless there is an option to toggle it on and off

raybondo, would it be possible to create a plug-in that recognizes english messages sent from the server and mission text, and replaces them on-screen with the proper translation? (Not using a translation engine, of course, but pre-written messages designed to replace certain string of text)
I've no other language I'd like to see VO in, but I imagine it would be a really nice touch for some users.

I think you could probably do that. I know you can modify the chatbox text.
can you modify the tutorial text and the hud text
Right. Just to be clear, I volunteer for the translation to French. (I know there are also a handful of other pilots who can also help). I have few technical/programmer skills. I can team up with someone who has.
Missions and missiontext, held server side: we could have carbon copy missions on the VO server, 2nd one in French. Or do it on the fly, client side (which is dumb).
Station interface and UI text: this need to be translated (or most of it at least) by the use of skinning or a plugin.
The Tutorial missions would actually be quite critical to help get Frenchies started and to retain them.

Translations are easy when you have dedicated servers with databases built around those languages. In other words, since Guild Software is only located in the U.S., this is highly unlikely, especially since features are always changing. It would only have an opportunity if there were servers in France and other countries, but right now, GS is too small for that.
I think a client translation patch or language-translating client downloadable version is possible.
