Portable/ Mobile Gaming

I have no idea how this could be implemented but I think something that would be a cool additionall platform for VO would be the handheld game sector. Seeing as VO exists for all major OS's I think a version for the PSP or Nintendo DS would be nice for taking VO with your where ever you go. There could be both an online, lan, and single player modes. The online could either connect to the existing servers or since the portable version would be slightly different it could connect to a special server. As for the lan, it would be more of a skirmish and combat oriented game, where you could chalenge your freinds who are sitting near you to a space combat or team up for a hive type mission. And the single player mode would be an exploratory theme, it would be not quite as fun as multi-player, seeing as VO is an MMORPG, but it would allow you to hone your skills and practice different things like trading or combat.

So, the real question with this is how it could be implemented while it still would be fun with all the various modes. What do you think?

Just porting the engine to PSP or DS would be a non-trivial thing. They're much more limited platforms than a PC (very little ram, texture ram, etc). It would be about as easy as porting the game to the original Playstation. A big undertaking, and more of a re-write than a port, and still very limited in the end.

We have considered making "external" applications that let you interface with the game in various non-game-playing ways. Like, for instance, seeing if your buddies were online, or checking up on trade prices, or seeing how your automated-bot-trade-route was doing delivering items to your player-owned-station. These would be more menu-driven and informative type apps, but could run on cellphones and so on. No 3D or flying around, but maybe being able to tweak automated defenses, or other bot activity. We don't really have much gameplay to merit this kind of thing yet, though.

Yay!. I have been waiting to hear if automated-bot-trade-routes and the like were in the plans. Now I know.

In any case, considering the amount of effort people have been willing to put into the LUA stuff, perhaps a less requirement heavy model for Guild development of the delivery of these sorts of applications should be looked at as the solution.

What I mean is that instead of Guild having to actually build all the HTML, WAP, etc interfaces, they only construct a core server that exposes requests via http, wddx, soap, whatever.

Then the community could work together to build the web pages, cell phone apps, etc, that use these exposed services.

An example of this with what is already available on the site might be a call to http//services.vendetta-online.com/request=playersonline&format=wddx

The return would be a wddx xml formatted return that contained all the raw information found on this link.

http://www.vendetta-online.com/h/active.html

By opening up a service like this, each request could be defined, with required and optional variables, that replied with the necessary data, or manipulated events such as bot-automated-trade-routes for example. Temporary or single use login tokens could be built into the system to authenticate specific users and verify their authorization to make certain requests.

In this way Guild would only be required to build the available requests, and the community would build the apps they wanted in order to use this functionality. A built in documentation system like Javadoc ( http://java.sun.com/j2se/javadoc/ ) could be used to facilitate the publication and documentation of all the available requests.

By going through a process like the PCC does for mission review, Guild could look at HTML pages that use these requests, to find the ones they want to make official and put up on the site.

Since the game doesn't yet have much of this type of content, now would be the time to plan the design for this delivery, before re-factoring became necessary.

I could see this game running on a Psp is it was properly ported and optimized but i find the controls would be awkward.

But the Psp is dead so there is no point wasting money and time. :)
