3rd Person View
A button to toggle to 3rd person would be cool.
F9 I think
F9 it is.
I'd like to see more view-points...
To what end? Controlling the ship is nigh-impossible, much less fighting. And for screenshots with your own ship in it, you can use the 'free-form' mode, by pressing F9 3 times.
If you want it for formation flight, the radar provides ample information for that purpose.

Well I think the external view worked well enough in Rogue Squadron.
Well, I think Rogue Squadron used a rather arcade-y flight model.
I prefer external views in racing games, where it is necessary to see your car in correlation to the surroundings (I cannot get the 'feel' by using the cockpit view, as opposed to driving IRL). In VO, I do not, since I have radar to do that for me, and it is more important to know where I'm looking and where my ship is pointed (both things are rather difficult to discern in tpv)

It'd be nice if there was a 3rd person view such that the nose of your ship moved accordingly with the direction of your screen. Essentailly, mouse look off for 3rd person.
The benefit would come from being able to see shots fired in relation to your ship. I know that it doesn't quite make sense. I've traced the outline of a vulture, and hit. I've shot at the tip of a wing and missed. And the shots from a vulture definately don't fire from it's two guns on the fuselage. Sometimes I can even see shots splash on my screen, but I don't take damage. Could be lag, but nonetheless it'd be nice to see just how close shots come to skimming my profile.
For the record, Rogue Squadron was a racing game. You could only fly your ship one way, "up", and even so it didn't handle like gravity was even existant.

actually, f9 only work in full-screen mode on mac.
that's because that in window mode, the menu bar is showing and the system maintains control and behavior of some keys. f9 happens to be exposé.
i dont know about linux but i would think something similar might be happening.
