Targeting Presets
I think this may have been suggested before, but I can't remember and it didn't turn up with the search function.
Would it be possible to add in the ability to save targets to a preset button? So for example, if I'm trying to defend a certain ship, I need to constantly check where it is. If I have said ship saved to a preset button, I can just press that button and it would automatically target that ship instead of scanning through the sector list to find where it is.
Maybe falling under the things on the SoonTM list would be these other targeting suggestions.
Press a button to:
-save ship to preset #
-target preset #
-target last ship that did damage to you
-target last ship that did damage to your current target
-cycle through ships that have done damage to your current target
-call a target to your group
-select last called target from your group

Good idea.
This would be amazingly useful.
Yah, this is useful and actually makes sense for a space game.
Tie-Fighter called, it wants its targetting shortcuts back. ;)
(Nice idea.)

Heh, I suppose I kind of did steal some of them from the X-wing/Tie Fighter series.
I was thinking of this same thing. For a twitch-based game, the method required to select a specific target in VO is at best cumbersome.
Now, I know you all know the process, but look at this case:
You're a UIT escort, nuetral standing with the Serco and Itani, and your convoy is attacked by one of those meanie Serco who is UIT nuetral.
- It won't show on any of the next/last/nearest enemy functions.
- There's no nearest object function (it may not be the closest, anyway).
- And the previos/next object functions take you through an entire 10 spheric Km of space-junk, asteroids and ships.
-- Solution: completely blind yourself by opening a full-screen list of ships-in-sector, and try to guess which green dot is attacking the other green dot.
Besides Ghosts' suggestions, I'd also like a side-screen or pop-up "in-sector" list, to be used for targeting.

That's also actually a good idea. If there was something in a sidebar or something (that you can turn on or off, of course) that was the sector list, that would be useful.
I like this idea a lot. In addition, it would be cool to have a button for an overlay with numbers, so when you click the sector list you don't lose control of your ship. So, for example, you hit the sector list and it overlays on your hud with all the targets number, and when you type that number (or letter-number combintation for more than 9 targets) you taget that ship. It would be faster than the current configuration, and you wouldn't lose flight control while you target, critical for large group combat.
Somewhat in the same vein: I've been wanting the ability to deselect groups of ships from the sector list. When I'm stalking the elusive trader, exiting the WH or station in a cloud of different convoys and hiding within the cover of two or three strike forces... catching just the right name in that ever-shifting list is nearly impossible. And lost time is lost distance, which equals lost opportunity to shave off the poor bastard's hull before he can jump.
Be nice to, say, be able to de-select the display of all NPCs or all of a certain faction, etc.

whats the bind to set my target preselect 1 to lecter?
If you don't mind me tacking on to this idea...
Another useful targeting function would be the "target the guy who's targeting my target" function from X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter.
This would allow us to more easily help eachother out in furballs.

That bind, TRS, is /explode... it'll save me some time, too.
Dood, it'd be such uber-pwnage.
I would also Like to see a target my targets target.
Match that with a ship pre-set, and a one key bind and two players are hunting the same target.

Dr. Lecter, there is a workaround for the problem you mentioned:
Sort the list by Faction, not by Distance. I always do that every time I log in, for the exact same reason you mentioned. I only wish it would remember that across log-ins.

How do you made this with Lua?
targetless ( http://www.vendetta-online.com/x/msgboard/9/17440?page=4 ) sort of does this now, with pinned targets... plus it does much more too =)
To keep pinned targets on the same key sort by faction, I'll be adding independent sort for pinned targets and normal targets soon =)

and next the game will come default with a hot key to auto target "Roda Slane"...
