I *really* want a blackhole.
One giant super-black object somewhere in grey space. Maximum gravity well pulls your ship right in.
The spacetime plane is warped all around. Your ship, pulled into it, MUST escape with MAXIMUM thrust (and then some) or suffer the faith of ...
...totally random, galaxy-wide jump!
Wraah!!!!!
Total adventure. Good or bad. Perhaps even destruction. Who knows.

this just screams deneb run cheat!
but would be fun anyways

Actually, since you have to report your position as it changes, it would be quite obvious if you'd used the black hole, and jumped to some other part of the known galaxy. And you'd likely therefor be disquialifyed.
But personally I'd love to see a black hole, and other space/time anomilys as well. It'd also be nice if the devs added a really cool graphic for wormholes.

Um... you guys do realize that black holes affect a really large area... So if you had a largish black hole in the center of a system, I'd expect that even attempting to jump across the system would result in instant death, and even jumping into the system would start affecting you somehow. Maybe intense X-rays eminating from the black hole roast your ship within seconds or something...
I didnt start to play this game to become an astrophysics scientist i dont care what black holes really are, lets find some features and put them in :)
Yeah. And ships aren't supposed to slow down when you release turbo too.
But lets give way to game play here.
I agree that plotting a course that runs right across the black hole should probably alter your course (like a gravitational pull that skews the trajectory of space probes and satellites). Perhaps even (and might be random) actually pull you right in and most definitely alter your course (!) by dumping you anywhere in the galaxy.
I would only put one black hole and in a sector that wouldn't affect CTC and main cargo routes. The center of Odia would make sense given the asteroid fields in there.

Yes! That would make this game so much more enthralling that Guild would have to charge $20/month instead of $10. I could spend days trying to get as close as possible to the event horizon before getting sucked in!
Yea sho.
How about this we put the black hole bang in the middle of the universe as one system with no sectors (just the black hole) and four wormholes that lead to differant areas n the map.

I'm imagining softy banging his head against the desk right now... hehe.

The sector with the black hole might be a nice spot for pirates to hide.
It would not be hard to imagine radars getting skewed by the nearby black hole and thus offer a hiding place (so to speak) for pirates.
Eg, radar emissions getting false distance reading:
BH..........p..........t
where target t looking at pirate p would get wrong (increased) distance information while pirate p would get (shorter) distance reading from target t. As if radar emissions would get sucked in/skewed the BH.
I dont care about astrophysics either. This is just game play stuff.
There could be a number of fun events revolving around this. As for the sarcastic comments in this thread, be more constructive in your criticism and go find ideas that might add to the VO universe instead of disparaging other submissions.
The idea here is to dump all our ideas so that devs can either implement some of them or be inspired by them for other things. Who knows, perhaps some of those suggestions take just an hour or two to implement. It's a small price to pay for a renewed "wow" factor. So shush up and get to it instead of mocking those ideas you dont care about. And you know what, I *would* pay 20$ a month if only a few of those ideas were implemented.

I can't say that I'm an astrophysicist, but I just can't see black holes as being something worth adding to the game. And after looking around, I realized that my idea of what a black hole is was wrong. A black hole has the same mass as the star that it formed from, just that its mass is concentrated in a much smaller volume. So in reality, if a star just suddenly turned into a black hole (without a supernova), nothing would really change in the system. The planets closest to the star might see their orbits change, but the farther away you get, the less change you would see. You'd really only run into trouble if you got too close.
But considering that, you have to also realize that black holes appear to form after supernovae, and in such cases, any planetary bodies that the star would have had orbiting it would have been blown away long before the black hole would have formed, so any system (in VO terms) with a black hole would really just be dark and empty.

So really what you're saying is that you have an idea and you just want other people to shower praise on it. That's fine, but you have to understand that people are going to disagree with you. I'm sorry, but I'm not going to create a whole new thread simply to say why I don't think black holes should be added to the game.
When someone gives you negative criticism, it's your job to defend your ideas. Give good concrete reasons why you believe that adding black holes to the game would be worth the effort, and not just, "I don't care about reality. This would be teh c00l!!1!." If you can convince me that it would be worth it, I might even contribute ideas, but right now, I am completely unconvinced that black holes would add anything of value or interest to the game.

They would look cool. How about a different set of background screens (skyboxes) for a system that has a black hole at its center? (Sedina?)
Oh, and dunno if this has been thrown out before - can the skybox backgrounds be animated?

I thought that the sky boxes did have a sort of animation already. Don't the planets rotate slightly over time?? Maybe not, never burned the time to find out.
This has been suggested at least a dozen times in the year and a half I've played VO. Sorry guys, but it's not gonna happen this time either. I can just imagine you all the third time this was suggested thinking.
"Three's the lucky charm! Come on devs, come one!"
and the fourth time,
"Four's the lucky charm! Come on devs, come one!"
and the fifth time...
"Five's the lucky charm! Come on devs, come one!"
Well, I've never heard of 12 being lucky, but...
And if you suggest it a 13th time...
...the devs may even refuse to EVER add a black hole. Don't tempt luck.

Crip, the sarcasm wasn't from you. I'm all for debating ideas. But mocking and sarcastically saying the game would so much more be worth twice it's monthly fee for something like this, is totally in-constructive.
Right now, people want content being added badly. We're loosing players, some vets, on this issue alone.
I'm simply suggesting some ideas that might add to the game-play and that probably would require minimal dev time.
These ideas are just to be added to the content list. Right now, Black Hole is not on the list so that's why I'm adding it. Despite black holes having appeared in many comments, it doesn't appear as they were actually submitted per say.

wait, what the heck!? we already have blackholes!
one in b-8, and 2 in deneb..

If they suck you up and spit you out somewhere else in the galaxy then they would be wormholes not black holes. Also random wormholes in blank sectors would be nice. They could be different from the other wormholes because the suck you in instead( these are natural wormholes, not created by ships). If you warp near one it will alter your course within a sector. If you get caught into one it can take you to a random sector. These wormholes will appear and disappear randomly in different blank sectors and there gravitation force will effect several grids within the sector. These of course will appear rarly.
In addition to those there should be a patter of wormholes that a player can activate, that appear and disappear. These wormholes will appear only in one blank grid. They only have one exit point and come in a consistant pattern that only the devs know. These can be in a one month cycle. Someone who tries to figure out these patterns could have a major traveling and trading advantage. These will also be rare.
