Turbo sounds: Mouse vs Lion

May 10, 2005 Harry Seldon link
I think that we really need a new turbo sound effect. The current one just isn't cutting it when it comes to creating an ambience of blazing your way through space strapped to a rocket, like flying a Centurion. :D

Why we should change:
1. It's a generic "pshhhh" noise that we've got now, no real sense of speed
2. Does a "pshhh" noise really add to the ambience of the game, and hook people in?
3. What we've currently got is something that sounds timid, like a mouse. We need something with more throatiness, something that sounds like business.

My Solution:
1. Add more bass to the current sound effect, at the very least. Preferrably replacing it with something else.
2. Add a bit of a screen shake/jostle when the tab key is pressed, to signify that you are really accelerating quickly, as opposed to "Gee, now the little debris specks are moving faster..."
3. Add different sounds for different ships.

We used to have a much more powerful turbo sound. They turned it down because of complaints. I haven't been happy since!

Yeah, I heard that they turned it down because of books falling off of shelves or something. What I don't understand, is why people with speakers that powerful are playing the game loud enough to knock books off shelves, and why they don't turn down the bass if they're having a problem with that. ¬_¬

Because then the rest of the game sounded flat. If you turn down the bass to compensate for the supercharged turbo, everything else sounded like it was coming from cheap speakers.

It was fun to hit turbo and have the sub start vibrating across the floor, though ;]

[stamp]'d on the screen shake idea. Very, very slight though.

Yah, turbo use to have tons of bass, supposedly some one's headphones blew out and a window shattered. Or so the myths say.

We don't have to have tons of bass for the turbo, just enough to add to the ambience. Come to think of it, some of the energy weapons could use a little more bass as well. Many of them make me think of beehives hurtling through space..

I liked the uberbass boost... :-D

Yea, I'd like to see more depth in sounds. And then I'd like to buy a really powerful subwoofer.

I was really bummed when they turned down the bass on the boost. With a good pair of headphones it used to sound really impressive. *BOOOmmmmmmm-mmm*

Now it's more like *piff*

We could introduce it with a entirely new slider in the Audio options thingy just for turbo sound effect/volume. And yes, if the screen shook, that would be cool. Just a tiny bit though, it wouldn't take much.

Or another option would be that user could choose which sound to use - from settings.

The "mouse"-sound could be preset.

you should be abble to control the volume of:
- turbo
-shoots
-musics
-(hey thoses are the only sounds effects!)

and i wanna add that all ships don't have to got the SAME turbo sound...
yo guys the Cap ship actually sound like my little valk !?!? WTF ?

I TOTALLY agree with that GRAIG just said. There should be ambient ship noise that plays with all the ships as well.

The ships should sound different. The Valk should sound like a formula one racecar and have a higher pitched drone when inside it. The Prom should have a deeper mechanical drone and a deep, percussion-like turbo burst.
The bus should sound like public transportation. Kinda mid-range drone but with a bad carburetor and some stalling every so often. Like my crappy Ford IRL. Especially "Who? Me?"'s bus. hehe.

AND...

If your ship is damaged to 50%, the sound effect for the drone changes to sound like your ship is broken.
Damaged to 25%, your ship should sound like there is something SERIOUSLY wrong with it. Warning noises for failing systems.
Damaged to 10%, your ship should grind and sputter, and little explosions can be heard. Computer error noises?

Could your ship talk to you? If so we could have ship personalities. Sexy female for Valks and Cents, Gruff male for Proms and Centaurs, and something like Chief Wiggum for busses. These voices could be turned on/off and would announce the items from the mission computer and/or other announcements.

AND... (If we can code THAT...)

Visual effects should happen as well...
If your ship is damaged to 50%, your on-screen display flickers a bit.
Damaged to 25% , it does a lot of flickering and your rear radar ceases to work (or something non-critical)
Damaged to 10%, Autoaim targeting goes offline, HUD becomes distorted, locators (like WH locations and Station dock locations) disappear. Lotsa flickering.

I think that would add quite a bit to the game.

Oh, and one more thing: I would love it if we can play our own Ogg sound files (or MP3 or whatever you could do without licensing) if we put them into a folder in the game package. That would be awesome as well.

werd on that, Leber. The flickering of the HUD should also occur in Ion Storms, methinks.

leber: you can already do that with .oggs.

I think LeberMac meant something like the "Event-controlled player-provided music and playlists" suggestion: http://www.vendetta-online.com/x/msgboard/3/8531

Which I'd still love to see.
