Bartering with Traders in Stations
One of my favorite vg's, which was a single player rpg on the Xbox had a great way of handling transactions between player and merchant. It was all based on barter, though there was always a set price and you never had to actually barter if you didn't want to. It was fun because it allowed you to not only gain more expensive stuff cheaper, but you could also, though investment in a particular trader, gain a level of respect or friendship with the trader, which later could be used for selling at a higher price then he/she would normally buy at.
How does this pertain to VO you wonder…
Well, I've been thinking a lot about how trading is being done currently and how much I'm not looking forward to getting back into it. As it is now, you go to station, look at local trade goods in demand, or daily trade routes to see who needs something, or do some mining and sell to the highest buyer, all of which get really boring really fast if you've done it more then once.
So, the idea is to add a few command line "traders(merchants/business men)" to each station. Each trader would be responsible for the buying and selling of a specific type of good. Wether it be Ore, Luxury Goods, Industrial Goods, Production Goods, Weapons/Weapons Components, Ships, Equipment(Mining/Repair), etc. Some of these rolls could be played by the same trader, example would be a small remote station may have only one or two traders that handle all the commerce that happens at that statoin, while a capital station might have 2 or 3 or the same trader type. What this would allow is for the player to become more involved in getting the best price, not only for himself but also for his customers if he/she is on a trade mission for another station.
When you dock you are given, instead of all the __/ Buy \_/ Sell \__ tabs you would have a __/ Traders \__ tab that would then list all the available traders at that station, AND, this is the most important part, would show your current trading standing with that specific trader. By selecting the trader it will then prompt you with the available items that he/she has for sale, price per unit, it will also list what YOU have for sale that this specific trader will purchase from you, with a price. Below that section, like now, will be where you place your order and what price you want to pay or sell at.
How Does the Bartering Work…
Say a UIT trader docks at a BioCom Research Station to purchase some Power Regulators. They fill in how many they want to buy, and it would show a price of how much that would be with a "buy" button next to it. Next to that would be a place for the UIT trader to then input how much they would actually like to pay with a barter button next to it.
When trying to buy HIGH:
If your trying to purchase something for more then the amount the trader is actually selling it for, the traders AI would then determine if you were just giving him a tip or if you are trying to buy him off.
• If you try to give them TOO much money they won't accept the money and your transaction is canceled temporarily and you take a minor trader faction hit.
• If you try to give them more then they asked, yet not outrageously over the price asked, it will be accepted in the way it was intended, as a gift, and you will receive a small increase in your trader faction standing.
When trying to buy LOW:
If your trying to purchase something for less then the amount the trader is actually selling it for, the trader AI would then determine if you were trying to rip them off or just trying to get a better price on a product.
• If you try to give TOO little money they won't accept the money and your transaction is canceled temporarily and you take a minor trader faction hit.
• if you try to give them less then they are selling, but is still not too low for the trader, they will accept the transaction and you will receive an increase in your trader faction standing.
The risk with the bartering is that if your transactions are canceled too often, or more then 3 times in a row, your no longer able to trade with that specific trader, even if you can dock and buy from other traders in that station until you leave the station and redock, also, if your faction dips too low you will not be able to trade with that trade faction at all, and can only try to bribe them into sales for outrageous prices (they price gouge you till factoin returns to a normal level). On the flip side though, if your trader faction standing were to increase, the trader would be more likely to accept lower prices from you and/or they would sell to you at a lower price then the next guy. This would in no way alter the already given discounts due to Mentor Badges.
It would be interesting to have a few of the same traders at different stations or at least your faction with them, like walmart or target, or any large brandname stores. Examples: (taken from neon signs around stations | http://www.roguelazer.com/vendetta/Waylonics/Waylonics01.html |)
Traders:
Chanboka (All trade goods)
Rama (All trade goods)
Abasu Arms (Weapons)
Koran Shipyard (Ships/Batteries)
Samo's Small Arms (light weapons)
Cha Weapony (light/heavy weapons)
Dodan Repair Shop (weapons/ships/batteries/equipment)
Jogoki Trade Goods (all trade goods)
Grochu Shipyard (ships/batteries)
Ronomo Shipyard (ships, batteries, weapons, equipment)
these are just a few examples of types of trades, there should be more then this, like mining specific traders, and even more specific repair shops that only offer repair modules and possibly different type of nanite ammo, each with there own faction, but they can be located throughout the univers since they are companies, not Nation/Factions, except perhaps the grey factons, though even they have some of these signs around them.

I really like the jist of this idea. As it is trading/buying/selling just feels too robotic. It's more like using an ATM then interfacing with a store.

Just a bump, no one else has any negative or positive comments on this?
[Shameless bump]
This deserves more attention then it got!

I think this is a really good way to add depth to the trading aspect of the game. It could particularly be interesting when buying off the black market!
Yea Gads, that sort of trading was incorporated in the old Starflight II game back in the late 80's. One would think the trading aspect of this game would be better than a 2D game from the 80's (shameless challenge to the developers ;) ). Come on, How hard could it be!?
