Unusually high ping times

Mar 13, 2005 Snax_28 link
I am experiencing unusually high ping times. I have been averaging roughly 80 since I started playing in January.... now I am floating anywhere between 400 and 300.

I have tested my interent connection, talked to my provider, etc... and it seems to be VO specific. Also, I have pinged numerous websites and vendetta-online.com is consistent with my ingame ping times when other sites are below 20.

My rig:

Dual 2ghz G5
2.5 gigs Ram
OSX 10.3.8

Do a traceroute...
Mar 13, 2005 Snax_28 link
Ok, heres the result of the traceroute. Now I am a complete noob at this kind of stuff, so if someone could maybe decipher it for me? Obviously it would appear that things are getting hung up at:

atlas.cogentco.com

and

38.112.26.190

But I don't know what this means or what to do about it.

Traceroute has started ...

Snax, can you use traceroute -I (you might need to be root to use that switch) during the peak hours (whenever it's at its worst) and post that?
Mar 15, 2005 Snax_28 link
a1k0n, I don't see an option for -I. What does this do... I'm on OSX, not linux, so there might be a different command for this. These are the options I do have....

traceroute [-m max_ttl] [-n] [-p port] [-q nqueries] [-r] [-s src_addr]
[-t tos] [-w waittime] host [packetsize]

traceroute (on Linux) has two methods of operation, the default uses UDP datagrams, and the other method (invoked with the -I option) uses ICMP Echo Request packets. When I read the manual page for Mac OS X's traceroute ( http://www.hmug.org/man/8/traceroute.html ), it seems like it only supports the UDP method.

Here's what I get, with both methods (interesting difference highlighted):

On hop 10, traceroute -I consistently shows around 30-40ms; traceroute using UDP datagrams on hop 10 shows anywhere between 30 & 600ms.
Mar 15, 2005 Snax_28 link
So what would that mean?
Mar 15, 2005 a1k0n link
It doesn't mean anything. It means the router isn't bothering to respond to UDP "TTL-exceeded" packets as quickly as it does to pings. The hops after it have lower pings, so it's obviously able to forward packets in less than 200ms. Their Seattle to Denver link might be a bit heavily utilized, but the pings aren't terrible.
Mar 15, 2005 Snax_28 link
Ok, I'm still in the dark though. How come my ping's went up so drastically all of a sudden. The game is unplayable for me right now. My service provider has said its not their problem, cogentco has said its not their problem, whos problem is this?

OK, a1k0n i sent this traceroute to telus, I'll post their response. But I was thinking, would this indicate that the problem sits with whoever is inbetween cogentco and telus?
Mar 16, 2005 a1k0n link
Possibly. I don't know, something more complicated than what traceroute is showing is going on.
Mar 17, 2005 Snax_28 link
Ok, so Telus is giving this a thorough looking at. They think its got something to do with their connection to Cogentco. Again, I'll post the results of this looking into.
Mar 21, 2005 Snax_28 link
Ok, so after two go arounds with telus, and one with cogentco, I have officially run out of options. Neither say that they have any ability to do anything about it. Cogentco blames Telus, Telus blames Cogentco. I wonder if switching providers would make any difference?

lovely.
Mar 24, 2005 Snax_28 link
Ok so, after reading the in progress update, I noticed that there was a mention of Cogent and png times. So this would be what others and myself are experiencing? And this is something that will be fixed on the dev side of things?
