In fogged sectors the sensor log does not list your own ship. I like seeing my own ship in the list (feels awfully lonely otherwise), and selecting myself in the list is the only convenient way I know of to target myself.

You should also be able to see yourself in the list when riding as a gunner, as well as the ship you are riding in, and probably anyone else riding as a gunner in that ship too.
