Not sure if this is related, but it looks like VO's server just crashed a moment ago. I was immediately logged out, no errors ... now i cannot login again (tries to connect, times out). Just me? or did the server barf?

Yes, we get paged any time there's an issue. We're working hard to debug the problem. We could revert to older code, but if we do that then we may not discover the actual problem, as it does not appear in artificial testing.
