Handling loot
Hi everyone!
Just installed VO today, and tried it alittle. I'm used to being able to pick up all the shiny loot (in other MMOs), but now I feel bad about leaving behind the stuff. What do you do with loot that is flying around in space? Do you change ship and go back to grab it? Or is there some other way, so it's not a total loss?
Thanks :)

Use your ship to run into it (that picks it up). press 'j' to see what "loot" you've acquired. Ask in-game on 100 if I'm not making any sense :).
Just remember there's a hefty fine for littering in this game. If you absolutely must leave loot behind, be sure you've bought an incinerator beam for your ship, since other weapons aren't able to target and vaporize leftover cargo. Or you can contact a member of one of a couple guilds whose purpose is to clean up leftover cargo, but I'm not sure how active those guilds are these days. I think Adopt-A-Sector (AAS) has a couple old-timers that are still around.
Loot will only last for so long. Longer if a player is in sector.
Some loot is hardly even worth picking up, some is worth a lot.
As a new player, when you are killing collectors, you will notice that you are leaving a hug pile of loot in your wake. I suggest you avoid picking up any loot while fighting, and only after you decide it is time to return to the station, fill up on loot. Unless some large amount of something valuable is dropped, it isn't usually worth returning just to pick up loot. Collectors don't drop good stuff, and you make more by pursuing the mission than picking up loot. On the other hand, pirates sometimes kill traders that where loaded with very expensive cargo, and they may go get a ship with a large cargo hold to retrieve it.

For the basic bot's picking up the scrap metal will usually get you the most money and will cover the cost of any repairs you need. Once in awhile they will drop the better types of ore, the aqua and bot processors and weps are usually not worth picking up.
Don't forget the price will slowly go down if you are grinding and keep taking back more and more scrap metal.

Thanks for the replies.
It was when fighting collectors I had a lot of loot flying around in space. Cargo filled up just too fast! I've noticed that loot in space has different colors... do the colors indicate value of it? Or do I have to check each one to see what it is, then decide what it is worth?

Sounds like a job for...
the Cargo Cleanup Committee People!
Or CCCP for short.

Colors indicate the type, look here:

Haha, toshiro, awesome. CCCP, I like it.
If it weren't so much of a bother, I'd make a guild. But it is, so I won't.
I always wanted to make a Guild of Calamitous Intent, but I'll never be able to devote the time necessary to make it work, especially if I insist on being Sovereign. I'd finally join a guild, though, if someone did that.
This comment had nothing to do with loot.

I run over cargo to pick it up and it rarely actually gets picked up. Is there something I might be missing? I don't think it is my cargo capacity. Speed? I have no clue. I keep running over the same crates over and over, maybe pick one up now and then, but it is frustrating.
Ignoring for a second the necrosis in this thread, if you don't have enough room in your ship's cargo hold, you won't be able to pick it up. Pressing j and reading at the top of the screen (just below the chat window), you'll see how much more space you have available. When you're targeted on a dropped object, the display in the upper right hand corner will tell you how much space that object will require to pick up.
Hope This Helps.

The info box on the hud that shows a wireframe of your ship also lists your space, right under your mass.
Assuming you do have room (and keeping in mind that some items require more than 1 cu of space - there are in fact some items that won't even fit inside a standard behemoth), the trick to picking up loot is to come to a complete stop, aim carefully, and then fly straight forward slowly. If you have trouble with the aiming, try using strafes to line it up better. You can make those very precise by holding down the brake while you do them.

Lag will also make picking stuff up a problem because the server thinks your somewhere else...
You fly into it to pick it up
We're going to add a sound effect that indicates when someone runs over cargo, but can't pick it up due to insufficient cargo capacity. Perhaps we'll make the cargo capacity number flash, too.
This seems to mainly be an issue of confusion for new users, in relation to their cargo capacity, so hopefully these changes will help.

I have a sound clip of a midget screaming in agony... Can we use that? I'd be willing to sign over the rights...
