Is this a rip off of Eve?
Hahaha!
The VO devs were psychic and before Eve was even a fart in the wind, managed to beat the CCCP Icelandicks to the release of the game.
Then the Eve devs got the bright idea to just rip off their customers with a screensaver instead.
Such is history.

EVE's retail release was before ours (they had a lot more funding, and developers.. and.. everything else), but I think our 2002 public alpha was well in advance of their game being playable. At least a year in advance of their actual launch.
I've met some of the CCP guys at a couple of different E3s, where we were both showing off our games. They were always friendly and cool, and we have plenty of respect for them and their game.
Unfortunately, because our game was smaller and underfunded, we aren't as well known, and consequentially we get a lot of the "EVE ripoff" type comments.. which are untrue.
[EDIT]: As another aside, I originally had the idea for a mission-driven MMO space-combat game around 1994 (which well predates Meridian 59, but MUDs and such had been around for ages). At the time, I wasn't sure how we would go about doing it.. consumer operating systems with built-in TCP/IP stacks weren't even the standard then, but playing Doom over the modem had become pretty common, and the concept was technically feasable. We started writing net games with Novell Netware (in DOS) just to get some experience. It wasn't until 1998, after the (mostly) successful release of Ultima Online, that we started pursuing the game in earnest.

Down with the Heretics! Fire for the Blasphemers! Children... fetch me my exorcism stakes, at once.
EVE is EVE and VO is VO. Lets hope VO doesn't become like EVE.
I'm going to try out EVE this week. Let's see what it is all about.

EVE and Jumpgate and VO and E&B were/are all unique titles, created separately around the same period, and each deserving respect in their own right. No mobs carrying pitchforks, please :). Frankly, we all owe a lot to the Wing Commanders, the Elites, the X-Wings, Starflights, not to mention every science fiction book, comic and film going back to Buck Rogers in 1928 (or maybe Jules Verne in 1865?). Since we all stand on the shoulders of giants, any contention about "who did what first" is pretty irrelevant.
Hats off, Incarnate. This post makes you extreme honor.
I have played Eve for a couple of days and came to the conclusion that the only similarities between Vendetta-Online and EvE-Online
was that they were both Space MMORPG's cep that vo have close to none RPG elements
Eve is like if you take Wow you make it look better make it more complicated
Vo is like if you take EVN you make it 3D with multiplayer then balance the ships/weapons and take out the rebels and the polaris

I found this after I was disappointed in EV Nova. I thought, instead of just making new graphics and missions for basically the exact same game as the original Escape Velocity, they could have at least made it fully 3D, or added at least LAN multiplayer. So I did a quick search, and found this game; then got addicted, then moved to where there are firewalls all over that prevent anything fun. EVE didn't even come up in my search, so I'd say this is the space MMORPG, or at least will be when v2.0 finally comes out sometime in 2025. (just kidding)
I agree...
...I been around for a while though, and been through a LOT, I sometimes wish the devs would roll back the universe to late Alpha, so I can be the one killing the newb that homed at Sector 10 :)

I think this ancient artifact beats both Eve and VO in terms of antiquity. I can't get the thing to work though, so it might be dead already. Who knows?

Myabe we need a new entry under the "READ FIRST" thread?
We'll just call it "rip-off?"
We'll just call it "rip-off?"

So nice you had to say it twice?
