Shiny New Cargo Crates

Jun 26, 2007 Eonis Jannar link
As most of you know, Vendetta 1.7.32 added in the awesome addition (courtesy of raybondo) of colored cargo crates. Here's a screenshot of all six of them, side by side.

From left to right: Green = ore, purple = addon, cyan = trade goods, brown = scrap metal, white = CtC cargo, and yellow = special drops (like processor cores).

Edit: Ack, used the wrong image by mistake. Should have been scaled.

Also, because nobody got around to it yet:

Vendetta version 1.7.32
- Connected addons can be sold from the Ship Sell list again
- Addons with ammo are purchased with full ammo again
- Addons don't stack inside ports anymore
- Color Coded Cargo Crates
- Fixed obscure chat coloring bug with wordwrapped lines
- EC-104 is in correct location in Ship Purchase list
- New characters now join channels 1, 11, and 100 by default (11 is the nation channel)
- Selling addons didn't update the Ship Sell list
- Bug where stations would occasionally not show anything for sale is believed to have been fixed for real this time

not sure how worried anybody save myself is about this but. Being partially colorblind (dunno what kind exactley, colors just appear less vibrant, almost equally as far as i can tell) i cant tell the difference between some of those crates.

the cyan and the white ones appear the same color and i suspect if the one wasent pictured mid flash the green and the yellow one would appear the same. also i couldent tell the brown one wasent dark red. the purple one (blue purple and vilot are all the same to me). i guess making the green one a darker green and the cyan one more uhh cyan i guess (i really dont know what cyan is) would fix it.

also i should point out that ive already putzed with the software for my graphics card to make the colors more vibrant.

:D
YEY now it's less hassle with the targeting :D

hands, while I'm sure it's no fun to be color blind, I have to say the colors are very very different to me.
However, it can't hurt to make them different for people who can't destinguish the colors.

Anyway, awesome update, and I LOVE the crates!
Next step might be to make the models different, too?

I'd suggest braille crates but... he's got no hands.

We could have all the crates hum in a slightly different tone when you fly up to them :)

Maybe if crates had configurable colors it'd help?
It can be hard for the devs to pick colors that are distinguishable for everyone. (i don't think there are many color blind people here tho. Or are there?)

About 8% of males and 1% of females have a form of color blindness. Usually it is with the red or green color receptors in the eye so blue is unaffected. Something to consider is that not all colorblindness is the same so I doubt there is one combination of 6 colors that would work for everyone with or without colorblindness.

To me it would make more sense to also change the texturing, patternings, and shape of the crates. However I also recognize that Guild is a very small team and some changes would require more manpower hours then I'm willing to give up. I think the color coding will help out a number of players. I rather see the devs finish mucking about with all the bugs they have been creating :) and get on to making some story driven missions and PvE opportunities.

wait wait wait

the idea of being able to configure the colors yourself i think shouldn't be that difficult / manpower consuming.

what does your client recieve? right a code that describes the target in this case a crate of some sort.
now the client runs lots of routines untill he orders the graphicscard to render a yellow blue whatever crate.

if someone with colorblindness could adjust the colors for the crates for him/herself it would not even matter which kind of colorblindness it is ...

and to do a quick lookup in the clientssettings before rendering shouldn't be the big deal i guess.
but sure, small team though.
other things may be higher in the priority list.

but this solution would be kinda cool for all of us even if the majority will stick to the defaults if they are set in a clever way...

I think the pink is too girly, I think of the Powerpuff girls, then I throw up a little. The scrap crates are a little too dark, and get visually lost about 200 meters away.

Different sizes and shapes of crates would be a great idea! Weapons and equipment should have longer crates, ores maybe more than 4 sided, etc.

Making and UV mapping a couple of new 6 and 12 poly crates shouldn't take too long.

Powerpuff Girls FTW.

Umm, I can understand the desire to make the colors work for everyone, but as sarahanne said, that really isn't practical. We've all been distinguishing crates by targeting them before now, so if you can't see the difference between some of them, it's really not hurting anything. In fact, I'm sure there's enough of a difference in some areas to still make identification easier on you. I'm pretty sure that LNH and others aren't going to be at any serious disadvantage because they have to target them to tell the differene between trade goods and xith or ore and processor cores.
Jun 27, 2007 Touriaus link
Well you could always have symbols painted on the cargo crates to distinguish between the different types of cargo too. Have them textured on or something or make the symbols bright white on the dark colors and black on the light colors or something.

It's no wonder developers in a lot of games tire of adding new stuff. This is a sweet cosmetic tweak for us, but people complain about accessibility? Accessibility is important, but it already was possible to distinguish crate contents with even a monochrome display by targeting them.

Complaining about this is almost as bad as the people whining black/dark ship colours give an "unfair" advantage in combat...

Thanks ray for the crates, they rock.

don't get me wrong the change is a vast improvement, i just thought id throw in my 2 cents on the color choices, being able to set the colors would be excellent cause you could then set them based on what your doing. ie if your doing ctc then youd want the xith to be bright white and the rest to be something else maybe brown or black, if your pirating npc voys then youd want the addons to stand out from everything else. im not terribley worried about the colors not being as different as they could be.

"I rather see the devs finish mucking about with all the bugs they have been creating :) and get on to making some story driven missions and PvE opportunities."
I couldent agree more.
