Hi. I've mentioned a couple of times in the newspost that I'm working on "improving" the existing ships now and then. Not spending a tremendous amount of time on them, just sprucing them up a little so they don't look so out of place compared to our "new" ships (especially the ones from Luis).
Some people on #vendetta asked me what it looked like, so I made a little collage thing, and I thought people on here might be curious as well.
Unfortunately, they're the sort of changes that are much easier to see when the object or lightsource is moving around.. harder to tell in a still screenshot, but here it is:

The redone Warthog, as well as the other ship changes, will debut with the New Client(tm). To see them like they are here, you'll need a DirectX9/Pixel Shader 2.0 capable videocard (Radeon 9500 or better, GeForce FX or better). In the fallback DX8.1 they'll still probably look better than before, but a bit different. Yes, it'll look just as cool in OpenGL too, as long as your card has the above specs (and shaders are enabled). On the windows side we're going to be switching to DX9 by default, since we're making use of several DX9-specific shaders now.

Pretty.
Nice!
Pretty nice! :-P
Interesting. Somehow, though, the Thog didn't feel so much out of place as the Vult is. The current Vult looks a bit like a plastic toy compared to other ships.
It IS a plastic toy!
Serco Warriors to be receive one in their first state of mobility (crawling) to learn the way of the pilot as soon as they can discern shapes.
Seriously, though, you're right, the vulture could use a visual touch-up towards more sleekness and, er, mean demeanor.

Not too shabby.
Much better than the original idea of replacing all the old ships!
As long as there is a hog I am happy

Ooo... Very nice!
I love how the vulture looks...although if other ships get the same sort of touch-ups as the hog, It'll look really out of place
Gorgeous, i think i'm going to be playing vendetta alot more soon.
Tis a Beaut.
Hrm. I need to see the difference between the current one and the new one. Looks mildly better to me at this point, but that's just a highlight/shaders thing.
Compare to:

But hey, any step towards more realism is a plus in my book. Of course, now I'll need to go purchase a quad-core G5 with a 512 MB card in order to see all this cool stuff.

I don't suppose DX9 is fixed re the leviathan?
Nifty!
Yes, I'm touching up the vulture too. I won't be doing major model or texture changes to most of the ships though. For the most part I'm leaving the diffuse texture alone and just adding specularity and normal mapping, and sometimes illumination maps. I am redoing the diffuse texture for tha Atlas.
Rogue: which DX9 issue are you referring to?
Leber: All I'm doing are "highlight / shader" changes. Adding more maps on top of what's there. It does look pretty different, but it doesn't show off well in a screenshot. I'd have to do A/B demonstrations in a video, and I'm too lazy to do that.

Rogue is either referring to the bug where the textures of the levi are off, or perhaps the severe drop in framerate.
..and that's why I was asking him "which". Last I looked at the Lev, it looked fine to me. But then, I'm mostly working out of the development tree, which has fixes not in production, and it's been so long since we've done a client update I can't remember what's fixed in production and what isn't.
So, I was curious specifically what he's asking about, so I can check.

Pretty!
1) What about that "ribbing" on the bottom-rear-center area? That looks like it ought to be a washboard, but it's flat as a plank.
2) The bumps on the rear wings seem like they ought to follow the paint, but that may just be me.

The basic conclusion was that in DX8.1 mode, I can max out everything. In DX9 mode, I can max out everythig. However, with everything maxed out in DX9 mode, the levy gets <4 fps. Turning texture resolution sees no change in fps in DX8.1 mode, no change in fps in DX9 mode elsewhere but the levi, and a 660% increase in FPS for the levi. So, somehow, the levi doesn't work with DX9, Very High textures, and my GeForce FX 5600. 'sokay, since I'm getting a 7800GT for X-mas. :P

Now what I do look forward to seeing is a much more detailed vulture, something to give it an sharpness it's currently lacking. Seeing as I have an extremely suped up computer system, I would love to see graphics and textures like these in every inch of Vendetta.
