I'd like there to be a better way of jettisoning cargo so that you can select which specific cargo you want to jettison.
I propose, as a quick interim solution, a screen similar to the U-key bound select-an-enemy screen, except it lists how much of a type of cargo you're carrying, its name, and it's volume/mass. Clicking on a particular type of cargo jettisons all of that cargo. This could be called the "Cargo Jettison Screen" and be defaultivly bound to the j-key.

As a frequent trader, I would agree that there needs to be a means to select and dump cargo.
*Most* pirates are using smaller ships and I would be more inclined to, on demand, dump my cargo if I could select some of it to dump rather than the my whole load.
I think this also would provide us working the trade routes more incentive to comply, choosing to dump some cargo as a bribe is more reasonable than dumping a full load of cargo that has more value than the ship when there is the chance that you may get away.
This would, overall, enhance the role of pirates and seperate those whom *privateer* vs. use the role of a pirate in guise to just kill other players.

I would LOVE to see a cargo inventory screen that listed cargo name, volume and mass.. in addition, I would also like to see purchase price if it's cargo that was bought at a station. Also some other considerations could be rarity/demand levels for items.
And definitely a way to pick and choose which cargo to jettison would be VERY beneficial.

I know the devs have been wanting to do something like this for a long time. Its hard to figure out a long term solution though. For the short term a list will work well enough.

When you press the j key, why not bring up a window with icons and an amount box for each type of cargo carried, plus a button that says *jettison all* then you would simply click on the cargo and amount that you wish to jettison, *bada bing, bada bang* away it goes. Waving the cursor over the item should also give a short discription of that item.

In real life in order to jettison specific cargo, you would have to go into the cargo hold and manualy dump it.. How would you be able to do this if you are in a small single pilot cargo ship? .. I do like the idea of getting rid of specific cargo though :D

gamejunky: I feel that several thousand years into the future the ship should be able to auto-sort the cargo and dump specific items.
Maybe only the larger ships (Centaur, Maud etc) could do it as they would have an internal cargo lift?

Forget the presence of an 'auto cargo lift' - the mechanics behind the actual sorting can be forgotten about - or are you going to explain also how running into cargo picks it up in the first place?
This idea is excellent, because you can especially in combat pick up junk you don't want and don't want to waste the time going to sell for very little profit. Not to mention that it would allow players to drop enough of their cargo to appease any pirates who attacked them, without actually making the transit a complete loss...

It is a neat idea and I think it would help distinguish between the different classes of ships. However if pirates know you can dump cargo selctively I wonder if they'd wait for a jettison or if they will stright for the kill. I know I'd carry a lump of carbonic ore to drop for the pirate and keep the better cargo for myself.
Corvus Prime could sell "modified mining scanners" that tell you the cargo of the target ship...
Sarahanne, as a trader myself, I would never *tempt* fate by offering up such low grade goods. I personally would carry a half dozen Luxury goods to by off a pirate, I'd rather loose 6 cargo units of Luxury than lose my ship, cargo and time to get back to where ever I was caught (most likely, also mid mission).

Very well said.... I really am liking this idea even more than before.... It gives a lot of dimension to the privateering aspect. I am not a pirate, but on the line of thinking, there is "honor amongst thieves"... A pirate would rather take your cargo (or part of it) and let you go so he can rob you again, instead of killing you outright and get ALL the authorities after him. Rob someone, and you make one enemy. Kill someone, and become EVERYONES enemy.
If I was a pirate I know who I'll be going for now :)

Demonen, I'd have to disagree on the scanners based on afew things. Mind you, these are just opinions with afew *facts*.
Some of the most successful privateers were feared not just for their ruthlessness (common lore) but for being so damned canny. Their ability to make sound judgement and educated guesses on a *targets* cargo, how much cargo and value of the cargo based on location and destination. Not just their ability to kill, I would love to see this type of *pirate* rewarded rather than the excuse of killing and claiming that a person is a pirate and I am a trader.
Allowing the scanning of a cargo hold takes all that required *intelligence* away and puts it into a button push. If a pirate is *dumb*, then they should have to settle for less than I offer. If a pirate is smart, they'll know what I've got <grins> and what / where it has value.
That puts the stress on the bluff vs knowledge, is it worth trying to *kill* that ship for it's cargo because my Centaur with 2 large weapons will make hash of a small ship if I get a lucky shot or just take the offered cargo and sell it somewhere for max value.

Ajones.. Precisely. Just like good traders know the good trade routes. *Good* pirates will know the good ones as well, and unescorted ships along those routes should be forewarned. If a pirate picks off the ships on crappy routes, then he will have to be satisfied with crappy loot.
This also adds a lot of competition for the best areas, and could add another dynamic to the game on another level. Pirate factions fighting each other for control of rich trading routes. If you were an EnB player, the Red Dragons and Chavez come to mind.
