change the flight model

i don't like the ability to strafe, it makes the game more like an fps rather than a flight game.

i don't like the "spin torque" thing. having your aim drift is irritating.

Okay, I'm just going to try and save you some flaming, by noting in advance that this is an EXTREMELY general suggestion, and that you'd probably be spared the inferno if you made that less of a command and more a request.

Also, Vendetta has its own unique feel. No, it is not a flight sim, and that's why it doesn't feel like one. It is meant to play somewhat like an FPS in space, relying more on twitch-based reflex gameplay than skilled manipulation of 500+ controls.

I don't quite understand what you mean about 'spin torque'. Would you be so kind as to elaborate?

This late in the development cycle I doubt anyone would redo the entire flight engine and mechanics of the game for your benefit. Sorry.

And Spin Torque deals with your ship's acceleration. What does that have to do with aim drifting? The aim drifts because it's predicting where the target will be by the time your projectile gets there.

I think he means how the direction of your ship takes longer to get somewhere than your mouse control does (IE the circle indicating where you ship is ACTUALLY pointing as opposed to where the crosshairs of your HUD are).

Basically, he is complaining about a very realistic element of the game. Of course you can strafe, that's what side boosters allow things to do in space. Have you ever seen the space shuttle?

And your ship lags behind your view because it takes time for your ship to reel around where as your mouse can zip about the screen without restriction.

These are AWESOME qualities of the game, giving it a truly unique feel.

May I mention that Glacius was on earlier saying "This game's flight system is gay" over and over...

"May I mention that Glacius was on earlier saying "This game's flight system is gay" over and over..."

Wonderful... And Glacius, I quite like the flight model.

Let's also keep in mind that when "real" space combat comes around someday, the ships involved will DEFINITELY have lateral thrusters. So yeah.

Let's not get into "real" space combat. Someone might point out how ridiculous and pointless it would be given our current understanding of physics.

If I wanted to play a flight sim, I'd be playing F/A-18 or X-Wing or something like that. This is a SPACE sim. In SPACE you can go in any direction as long as you have the thrusters. Live with it.

1) i thrive on flames.

2) the flight model is gay.

3) elaboration on aim drift: set your JS all the way right, move for a second, then recenter it. the nose of your ship keeps moving as it slowly decelerates.
Oct 02, 2004 Starfisher link
You have to elaborate as to why the flight model is gay. If I remember your in game diatribe, you claimed having lateral thrusters removed skill from the game.

How does being able to move in more directions remove skill from the game?

What ship are you in when you do the joystick test? The better fighters don't have that problem because they are more agile. The bus, heavy fighters and trade ships all take a while to get moving/stopping - you know, intertia.

You'll find people might actually listen to what you have to say if you elaborate and don't make an ass of yourself.

1) fanboi's won't listen anway...such is life.

2)the lateral thrusters make it so that players players can stop and start on a dime. some like this, some don't. i don't. i find it takes more skill to control your movement with only a rear engine.

3) thus far any ship i've done the JS test in has drifted. n00b ship up to the vulture/warthogs.

"fanboi's..."

Whatever d3wd.

Glacius, thus far, you are the only player I have seen to date that has ever complianed about the ships ability to strafe. The devs are not going to overhaul the entire game just because one (1) singular BETA tester doesn't like the flight model.

And have you entertained the possibility that the problem you are experiencing is not one of game mechanics so much as a problem with your joystick? I fly with a joystick and have not experienced the problems that you were frothing at the mouth about in game.

"2) the flight model is gay."

The flight model is homosexual? How so?

ok folks, lets just let the trolls sleep under their bridges and return to coherent discussion of the game.

*light bulb*

I had a thought here. Glacius is complaining about the ships drifting. If he's in physics mode, the ships will drift quite a bit. I tend to use Arcade mode when traversing the universe and only shift to Physics mode when in battle. Perhaps the problem here is that Glacius is using Physics mode. That would account for the drift.

Glacius, try pressing the < ' > key and see if things don't flatten out for you. This will toggle the flight model between Physics and Arcade.
Oct 02, 2004 ctishman link
Do give that a try, Glacius. If you have further problems with drift, I'll probably be on this evening, and I can try to work out what (if anything) is wrong.
Oct 02, 2004 DireCoyote link
He's right about the drift.

He's talking about TURNING, not accelerating in any direction. If you have a joystick, and you turn and then center your joystick, it takes a second to stop moving. It drifts to the right (turning) more than you pushed it, due to the way the flight engine works and how thrusters WOULD logically work. It does make sense.

Honestly, I would love a more precise version of joystick handling, where my stick stops moving when I center it and does not drift. It would really improve my aim. But with the flight model, the way it currently works makes logical sense, since there are thrusters making those turns.

Again, this is a joystick-controlled ship at 0 velocity in all directions, turning and drifting after the joystick has been recentered. Ships with less mass drift less in this manner. It makes logical sense, it's the way most space-sims SHOULD work due to the way thrusters would effect a ship, but most space sims opt for more accurate turning control so that aim is easier.

Ah, I understand what you're talking about now. Heh, wait 'til you get ahold of a Valkyrie. It doesn't wobble much at all. >:)
Oct 02, 2004 Magus link
Oh. This is the wobble Arolte was talking about.

Press the ; key. It turns off mouselook so you will always face exactly where your ship is instead of having a free floating viewer that your ship catches up to.

<2)the lateral thrusters make it so that players players can stop and start on a dime. some like this, some don't. i don't. i find it takes more skill to control your movement with only a rear engine.>
-1.) Fly a Ragnarok and tell me the ship starts and stops on a dime.
2.) Don't complain about lack of skill until you actually fight somebody with some.
