I think that a gunship class would change the environment of the game.
I have been building the "trident" for some time now and it is a long long long painful process. It would help to have smaller guilds of all kinds to have a half pint trident > gunship. ( craft-able )
hull > 250000
shield > 10000
dock > 2x ships
turrets > 2
weapons > 2x large
turbo speed > 180
spin > 600
thrust > 600
max haul with 2x XC's > 800cu
insurance 500,000
would take approx 1/2 to 3/5 less material and time to construct !
can haul
can be used more for assaults
Kinda little faster moth with armor and shields.. but could be used in assaults on stations & other capitol ships.

Sounds good lets do it !!!!

Absolutely not.
A trident is supposed to be painstaking and hard to build. You're just looking for an easy way out of having to spend more time and effort on it. Stop whining about it and finish your trident.

An intermediary ship is a great idea -- has been suggested and discussed before.

no trolls ha
That is correct, jen@arvig.net. There is no such thing as trolls in here.
Pay greenwall no mind - he likes to pretend to be leading an anti-troll movement, beating his pectorals and hollering whenever he develops a distaste of someone.
I don't mean to seem mean or anything, I was simply stating the truth. For the power that comes with tridents, there needs to be a great price to balance out the advantages.

Trident is the intermediate ship, lets start building connies!
Building a trident is kind of a masochistic experience. When you are finished you get a frigate that is actually very far from what a frigate should be.
It has 1 large front port (idiotic solution) and 4 extremely stupidly placed turrets which you can equip with pretty mediocre weapons and abysmal shield that can be brought down by a single swarm rag.
It's slow & barely maneuverable.
About the only thing it's actually worth is as a glorified heavy cargo ship.
Ordinary behemoth has 2 L front ports and 3 turrets. It's faster and more maneuverable then a dent. Slap a shield on it and you have a gunboat thats better then a freaking Trident frigate.

See Joyless? that wasn't so hard. Try to distill your thoughts like that next time (without all the bullshit) and you can be considered for entry into middle school.

Back on topic -- I totally understand the reasoning in the OP. It would be nice if there was something in-between acquisition of non-capital ships and tridents to bridge the gap. Right now you can spend a couple weeks grinding away at various factions and doing missions to get various ships, but to get a trident you have to spend an exponentially larger amount of time.
Adding a craftable ship that is smaller but takes less time than a Trident would only be good for the game -- as it would give people more reasons to keep playing and elevate the possibility of crafting a Trident for the common player. Most players take one look at the requirements for the Trident M (including some vets to this day) and say "no fucking way I'm doing that!".
Of course this suggestion will never happen, given how long everything seems to take. But it is a good suggestion.

that's not a gunship, that's a corvette :D
idd has a good concept .... Corvette I forgot about this ship class
But bojansplash is kinda thinking like a "uber combat" moth this is also interesting
By the way I am building the trident with help once and a while from other whom I thank ( thank you )... but on the most part by my self. And yes it is a horrific masochistic experience that I am 2/3 done with and wonder why some times since it is a flying slug with turrets that are half blind ect ect ect. The only reason I am building it is to haul materials for future constructions possibly connies or guild stations. In my opinion the trident type m is really good for hauling and using as a mobile base.
Even thou Samo is a guarded commodity used in reactor construction; I would gladly waste it on a gunship/corvette class ship since it would be more useful for smaller guilds. Even thou it was suggested I kinda cringe if the pirate guilds got them, but this is life so I am moving on lol.

+1 to a craftable sub-frigate offensive ship. Corvette seems to be the right name.
- I think it should have much less cargo space, it should probably be only able to dock a single medium ship or two light ships. It's a weapon, not a weapons platform.
- Firepower should come from forward facing ports, with turrets functioning mainly for anti-ship defense.
- The shield should be enough to soak incidental damage, but it should be easily dropped by a real attack (ie not require a bomber).
I think also that the initial effort in creating either dent or corvette should be decreased, but the warranty repurchase should involve some measure of crafting as well as credits. That creates less of a distinction between haves and have-nots, and means that killing a dent is actually worth something. It also creates a demand for player trade from the people with the $$$.

I can agree with vanatteveldt

The most realistic, sensible comment in the entire thread.

+1 csgno1 and Connies
+1 to to small frigate rar, umm I seriously agree with bojan though.
maybe in an few years we will see a shield addon rar

Ok, I been going of his suggestion..
Moths of War does have a certain sound to it :)
Could it have:
sheilds
2x turrets
2x large weapons
180>200cu hold

It should have less than 120cu capacity if it's really a battle moth
Id say battle moth would be interesting to have on its own.. I think this should be looked into
or
An shield emitter that can be equipped in a smaller ship turret spot. ( a buildable item )
Otherwise it just be a moth with limited cu space ... and not any good for hauling large items
But that aside there needs to be a standalone corvette class ship:
hull > 250000
shield > 10000
dock > 2x ships
turrets > 2
weapons > 2x large
turbo speed > 180
spin > 400
thrust > 400
max haul with 2x XC's > 400cu ( i reduced this )
insurance 500,000
