It's 3.3.2, and it's time to talk about paint jobs again. YES, I know there's a thread around somewhere that talks about. NO, I'm not gonna dig it up now. When guilds are fully implemented, ways are gonna be needed to visually identify ships. Hence, the need for custom paint jobs. I personally think that up to two different colors should be allowed on a ship, and there would be varying patterns of which to paint the two colors with.
If you are running a guild, selecting colors specific to your guild would be essential to knowing which ships were yours even if they were from another nation.
If you have a color scheme you have in mind, please give it, along with the guild name. Orange on purple is a nice color combination I might like.

I want a jet black prom with red flashes >:D
ummmm can I take "background navy blue" and "sector 7 orange" ?
/me likes shining white or shining chromatic. But hey that is only me :D
Or or, yeah a kinda of a reflective colorscheme. yeah that would be cool. now you can see me and now you cant. ehhe :D
cheers

That would be very hard! Have you ever played a game with real dynamic reflective surfaces? Or even the nvidia chameleon demo? A single reflective texture takes TONS of resources to make. Say 2 reflective ships in a sector? Fps drops to next to nothing.
rogue,
I didnt say that it would have been easy. I said that it would have been cool :D
But just give me a white paintjob with the rglow effect, and im all set :D "you know, like the knight in shiny armor :D"
cheers

darn it, dave already took the jet black... now i'll have to go for grey (light grey... like in EVN the starbridge, the leviathan, and many others).
but really, dave. diplomats need black limos! please leave us our nimbus!

PS: reflectivity would also require the use of pixel and vertex shaders, which means windows only unless you have an uber gfx card in mac/linux, and it also means that unless you have p+v shaders 2.0, you're probably not going to be able to handle multiple reflective surfaces very well.
for reflectiveness just use the cockpit effect we have now, its close enough :)
oh on the colors...
put me down for,..., chromium and chromium oxide

Actually, it could be easy if you didn't make the textures react to the environment that much like in F-Zero GX.
Sign me up for dark green matte base color and black, phong shaded/enviroment mapped stripes.
How about the same type of color selection possibilities as in HomeWorld?
About reflective stuff: Why? envmap is enough. Different envmap for each sector? Realistic enough.
This is a game. We're supposed to explore, trade, pirate and fight, not take screenshots of our nice ships. Leave that to the devs.

hmm... no. if i play a game, i also value its graphical splendour. take diablo 2 for example. there, your choice of armour/weaponry is reflected by the outer appearance of your avatar. or neverwinter nights (or any other MORPG... note the single M, i don't know too much about the MMORPGs), there, it is almost considered normal that you can change your avatar's skin&hair colour, tattoo, overall body weight, clothes...

Would EVN sell well if it had the same graphics capability of EV? No, what made EVN a lot better is it's ability to have so many nice things, like.
Engine Glow
Ship lights
Smoke Trails
Special weapon fire animations
Landing animation for ships
Warping animation for ships.
Firing animation for ship. (see asteroid miner)

-Custom paint jobs help give each person's digital self more character and makes the game more immersive. We want it for the same reason people put custom paint jobs on our cars in real-life. So stop whining.

I don't want a paint job on my non-existant car...
/me tints roguelazer's monitor bright green.
As long as you see the content thats all that matters right?
You don't want something you will be looking at to be ugly.
Take the weebl and bob forums for example, you can still read it it is just painful to do so.

I agree that paint jobs and such should be added in. It would be great for things like criminals, guils, police, bots, etc.
However, it should NOT require the person to have UBER SYSTEM(tm) to get it to work. Simple is key to the whole paint thing, IMO. Logos or such 'brands' on ships could also be a descriptive, but graphically simple way of doing things, me thinks.

Did we ever SAY it required this "ubersystem" you mention? no. not once.
Well, if the game had to load a separate texture at current texture resolution for each player, it would. :P I say make it a layer with a max size of 64x64 that gets painted dynamically over the standard texture.
