BBS in-game

Jan 10, 2010 Alloh link
Create a small and very simple BBS system. Maybe on Bar.

Each Player or Guild can post one ad, free form.

Ad is erased when player logs, or no guild member left online.

Optionals:
-4 BBSs, for each of the 3 nations and 1 for gray/universal
-Moody Form for player, standard ad like "I'm in the mood for (activity-list) in (zone)".

Objetive:
Develop inter-player interaction and cooperative missions. Serve as fast reference even for complete newbies.

Examples of possible posts:
(Nation)Nation war today at 22:00GMT
(Guild1)Escorts offers, lowest price. Contact channel 999.
(Guild2)Need any ore? We have all. PM PlayerName or OtherPlayer.
(player1)I'm at B8 and no one can beat me on PvP
(Player2)Widowmakers for sale, PM Player2
(Player3)Botting party on gray, PM me for group.
(Player4)Procuro jogadores brasileiros
(Player5)Bounty offer: 999c for killing PlayerX

Interesting. I kind of like this idea.

there already is an ad system in the game called "news"
Jan 10, 2010 ryan reign link
The in game "news" is worthless, and very infrequently updated. This really isn't a bad idea. I'd change the

the probability of a given outcome to an event is P=Alloh having a good idea and the event is repeated N times, then the larger N becomes, so the likelihood increases that the closer, in proportion, will be the occurrence of the given outcome to N*P

Alloh proves the theory of probability/law of averages! Good job!

You mean people other than utter newbies actually still look at that?

Seriously though, that feature does not easily facilitate the kind of thing I believe Alloh is suggesting. If nothing else, it might add some value to the other currently useless feature- The Bar.

Edit: Darn it all! Ryan wins :P

We can pin notes on closet for monsters to tell us where the candies are.

Regarding the "worthless" news that is "rarely updated": One need only submit an acceptable item and I will add it within 24 hours. Any of the examples given by the OP would be suitable. Some sort of expiry controls would be nice though, otherwise I have to do it manually, which I'm willing to do if the workload isn't too huge.

One need only submit an acceptable item and I will add it within 24 hours... unless its Ryan.

Fixed that for ya.

"One need only submit an ACCEPTABLE item and I will add it within 24 hours."

There, I fixed it.

The overwhelming majority of submissions get published. Submissions for the past 2 years or more, along with an explanation for the few that were not published, are viewable by anyone interested in looking. The archival threads are locked, so are easy to spot. Each thread begins with the publishing requirements provided by the devs. As I stated, there's no expiration system, so until something better is created, the submitter could give me an expiry date and I'll manually unpublish the item on the appointed date (I can't promise an appointed hour though).
Jan 11, 2010 Alloh link
How and where does one submit? In-game? I have no idea...

The idea os in-game BBS is immersive, and requires no operator intervention. And can be dinamically updated.

Like, when I log in, I'd post: -Wanna go botting
and after some time, I can change it to: -Need some megaposis
while some later it become: -Hive Cells for sale, cheap!

Since the volatile nature of these ads, they are remove once the player has logged off. Of 5min after, to cover unexpected disconnects. But submission must be in-game, and be immediatly published.

Abuses? Not that I can imagine. Except some profanity or taunts, just like the /100...

And that really could lead to improve player integration and cooperation, specially for newbies! Even mentoring offer/request can be there!

Such a feature would either have a signal-to-noise ratio approaching zero, and thus fall into disuse, or go completely unused.

We already have more communication ability than we should. If you can't express yourself well enough to advertise on public, global chat channels, a BBS wouldn't help you.

Again, I realize that this has none of the immediacy you describe.

Whistler:
A few examples of items that won't be posted:
-Personal ads.

That is why I think the BBS complements the news, instead of replacing if. Personal ads with 140 characters long, to keep brief!

But many of those rules can be used on BBS screen.

To avoid abuses, add a button "Flag as Innapropriate" could be used. And since its a signed ad, any recidivist can be punished, at least preventing new ads.

Even rats can use it:
(rat1)Pirates stole your cargo? PM DblCross for recovery!
(GuildR)Want safe passage in gray? Pay advanced for RatName!

Alloh, stop trying to turn everything into a "traders vs pirates" argument. We're talking about game development here. The fact that pirates could use the system is entirely irrelevant. The point is that such a system would provide negligible additional benefit to the game.

If you would like to crate your own game in which there are station BBS's and "pocket capships" and monsters on closets full of candy, no one is stopping you.

EDIT: Fixed typo. Good catch, doc.

I think you meant to say "If you would like to crate your own game," ladron.

I think long term, once VO has a far larger active player base, this would be of great value. To an extent it would be beneficial to the current player base. Guilds like EMS could maintain a listing of their services. Players like Nahin could list the special equipment he hawks and the price he's asking. Mick could post a request to buy a superlight kit. New and established guilds could use it to recruit. Event notices could be posted.

Whistler, I apologize for disrespecting the service you provide the playerbase. However, most of these items are not things I would want to see listed on news. I'd rather news further the Vendetta story. Hell, I'd rather see Ryan's anti TGFT news posted on news than player to player transaction information.

Of course such a system will be abused. Thats why it should be given some means to moderate. But if Peytros wants to "Write Penis in Deneb" 1,000 times, more power to him. The rest of the community will flag it as spam and profanity and it will be deleted and himself restricted from posting for a month. It hardly opens the door to anything worse than is said openly on 100 or here on these hallowed forums.
Jan 11, 2010 MythOpus link
I would very much like to see this implemented into the game.
Jan 11, 2010 ryan reign link
Fluffy... I haven't written an anti TGFT piece in quite some time, hell as far as I know I'm on decent to good terms with TGFT ever since Surbius and I quashed our... ummm, what ever it was we had.

But you're right... UIT Action News would be great for the in game news, it would give miners something to read while they mine and would add a more immersive feeling. Your not the first person to want this either.

[EDIT] Corvus Network News... they would also be a great addition to the in game news. Can't believe I forgot them.

Impavid, Ladron, Lecter, your harassing of Alloh for no reason is both unconstructive and annoying. I'm sure your egos will recover from his daring to have a good idea in time, so stop being such jerks.

Anyway, I like the idea. I think it would be a good idea to make it prominently displayed so that you can see it when you dock and don't have to dig for it like you do the current News system (maybe a separate station tab under Comms?). That way people will see it and use it more frequently.

Strangely enough, that's exactly how we feel about most of Alloh's posts. I do give credit when it's due, however:
