Escape Pod fix for Space Quake

This idea was so awesome and perfect that it merits its own thread.

[1] When your ship explodes, you're thrown into an escape pod, which has exactly the same stats as an observer bot.

[2] You can fly your pod to a station and get a ship, or someone could kill the pod, or you can /explode.

[3] If your pod dies, you respawn in [a] a random capital station in your nation's space, or [ b] a random capital station in a nation's space that you're above -599 with if you're <-600 with your own nation, or [c] in Odia at the Corvus capitol if you are -599 or lower with all nations.

Devs, you should make this happen. Now. It would revolutionize the RP elements of the game.

People would care about dying, without it being horribly expensive or having silly timers. Impact on real noobs is nil, because they're already near the capital stations (or should be). It would give pirates a reason to go tri-nation KOS: we don't want to get shipped off to UIT, or Itani, or Serco home systems when we die.

Don't bother with making pods "capturable," and don't wait until there's a faction redux. Just do it.

You know, this is probably the best idea I've heard so far. I'm not certain how well this would work in practice, but its definitely worth a test run.

Might need to bump the armor to prevent accidental over shooting from taking out pods accidentally, but that's not too hard.

This basically just adopts paintball's scenario game model for reinsertions. Because the game doesn't actually stop (for 24-48 hours, anyway), dead players just go back to a starting point and then have to take the time to move back towards the front.

aside from the fact that this idea is straight out of another space game.

if you get pod killed you should be sent to what is labled as your home station because they will have a copy of your body in a cloning bay

No. You get sent BACK. I imagine that most of VO is drooling over what this means for their interactions with you, pey.

And since this basic idea was being used for gaming long before there were any computer games, much less space computer games . . . couldn't care less about who else may use this approach.

The observer bots don't really seem to be able to go all that fast and killing one isn't really that difficult. So, if this is done, please don't make the escape pod stats exactly the same as an observer bot. Keep the hull strength at 1000, but it make it much faster. Either as fast as a seeker, or faster.

225 m/s infinboost, 70 m/s normal will be fine. Nominal mass, thrust, spin torque. Next.

So... lets see.
Either I have to fly all the way back to a station after I die, and then fly back into the fight, or I die after I die and I have to fly from a capitol station all the way back to the fight.

Very lame.
Jul 25, 2009 Dr. Lecter link
Right. Lame. Because you should be back in the thick of things less than 2 minutes after someone put a bullet in your fucking skull.

That's a combat model that just screams fun.
Jul 25, 2009 slime73 link
Well, erm... it is fun. Shooting people is fun. I didn't think we wanted to stop people from shooting each other for long periods of time.

this is a really good idea, but the problem is there arent enough players for this to be fun. if there is a 3 on 3 furball one side goes down it will take 20 mins for the furball to continue. what a shame there isnt more players, hopefully this new ad will pick things up
Jul 25, 2009 missioncreek2 link
I most enjoy a good furball. The 20 minute trip back from a capital would put a serious damper on furballs. I vote no.
Jul 25, 2009 Dr. Lecter link
If you want a friendly furball, don't pop your pal's escape pod. BS is a perfect example of why "easy, friendly combat" has to become a mutual opt-IN. You cannot engage in effective area denial combat when your opponents pop back up faster than fucking whack a moles. It's time-long past time-for VO to grow a pair w/r/t combat. You die in the middle of nowhere, and your opponent doesn't feel gracious? Back to the core system for you. The plus side is that capital and nation space will become populated with something other than noobs.

Interesting Idea. the way I see it you should get sent back to your original capitol and if your Hated/KOS there then you get jailed for a short period of time or fined before being ejected back to corvus....

I also think the first time you die in an hour you should be sent to your home station and after that you go to the capitol

It would be nice to penalize death a little more... I seem to remember this request from, er, 2003, though.
Jul 25, 2009 peytros link
oh also this is only a good idea if when you shoot the escape pod a flesh colored cargo drops called "whatever pilot you just shot. corpse"

Dr. Lector: thanks for making a thread on this. I've been thinking about this for a while and am glad I've finally gotten the opportunity to discuss it.

I like the part about going to a random station within the capitol, rather than The Capitol Station. Funny how the paperwork can get lost with those clones, eh?

I'm not sure about respawning in another nation's capitol when hated by your own but not theirs. While I agree that it's silly for me to be nearly admired with both Itani and Serco when I kill their traders all the time, greyspace just doesn't have enough breathing room yet. However, that isn't really a big deal to me; I'd just like to see this put in game asap.

To everyone complaining about furballs: The whole point is that you only pop a guy's pod if you REALLY want to hurt him. Hell, I would most likely leave alone the pods of traders I pop unless they were being a real whiner.

Corpse idea is rather funny. I'll have to vote yes on that. I might start a collection.

I still think dieing should send you back to your home station and probably not to the other farking end of the 'verse. However, if you make the escape pod a decent escape pod, then the pilot doing the escaping needs a fair chance to get to a nearby friendly station or let their aggressor decide for them; then you can add the "sent back to a capital station" bit but still leave the chance to get to escape.

The escape pod idea is superb but some more details on stats to give the idea that this little doohickey is an observer on steroids.

Escape Pod
Armor: 3000
Cargo: None
Weapons: None
Mass: 2000kg
Length: *blah*
Thrust: 300N (or something that gets 2000kg to 225m/s in 3 seconds or around there)
Max Speed: 100m/s
Spin Torque: 10.0 Nm (or something that allows 2000kg to zip around)
Max Turbo Speed: 225m/s
Turbo Energy: 35/sec
Includes a self contained Fast Charge Battery.

And with the creation of the Escape Pod into Vendetta-Online, we have near endless possibilities for events and fun situated around this little object.

EDIT: Plus add a Pod kill counter if you want to keep track of such things.

vote of approval to surb.
maybe a larger turbo speed? say 250m/s?
Jul 26, 2009 Impavid link
To the original suggestion: Yes please. To surbs addition: surprisingly, an additional yes please. This gives successful combatants time to breath and repair, adds a new element to the battle (kill the pod too!) and increases the possibilities for group tactics beyond "Die, relaunch and kill the guy who just beat you while he's weakened."

Love it.
