aft view (single button)

I'd like to have a fast 'look back' key so I can check my 6. I'm sure that is already implemented, but I was unable to find it. The aft view should only be active as long as I press it.

I doubt this would serve much of a purpose with VO's mechanics...it's pretty easy to look at your radar and then flip around if need be.

This was recently suggested, and you get the same reply as the last n00blet:

You want to check your six, then swing around and see what's there. Otherwise, do what pilots have always done: rely on your radar.

Goodness. Dr. Lecter -- I really hope you don't represent the average community member. I really, really hope you are not someone on VO's staff. I am a newbie (or perhaps n00b, as some l33ters may call me), and I take the time to provide feedback so this game may become better. You, 'Dr. Lecter', have done nothing but providing negative comments on feedback. Did I offend you, or are you just letting off steam at the general public? And why, please, do you call my feedback 'bellingerent'? I believe the suggestions were far from it. A bit terse, perhaps, because I had written down a lot of them. Suggestions I wrote down on my way trying to play the game. I thought that was welcome. My apologies if I mis-read this board's intentions.

I am a bit taken aback by this hostile reaction to feedback, though. somehow, I expected more.

Dr. Lecter does not represent the majority. He has issues, possibly stemming from some sort of real life abuse in his childhood. Please do not be turned away from VO by his comments. Your suggestions are welcome. Be sure to use the search feature so you can post in an existing thread if something has already been suggested.

Maybe if you hadn't posted a million billion threads with banal and over-discussed suggestions, lecter wouldn't have as good an excuse to be a prick.

They should include views, It would postively enhance game play. I honestly don't think the Devs know how. There are no negatives associated with being able to look around your cockpit. It makes no sense not to include it in the game. It would only add to the immersion of the game. The only argument anyone seems to have against it is Lecters , we haven't had it before we shouldn't have it now argument. If thats not an idiotic approach to improving game play I don't know what is.

If you could read english better than you attempt to write it, Taljin, you'd see my argument against this feature is rooted in maintaining VO's realistic combat model and not in mere tradition.

But then again, you probably have serious reading comprehension issues, stemming from alcohol/drug abuse by your mother during your pre-childhood. My condolences.

Whatever buddy, I could care less about your insults. I believe being able to look all around your cockpit is pretty realistic. Whats unrealistic is staring forward at all times. Different ships can have different views, some you can't see behind, some you can, every ship can be a bit different. I honestly don't see how it could negatively effect anything in VO.

Heck, even cars have (whoops, i mean had) rear-view mirrors. I'd just slap one on my ship and laugh in the face of the crippled pirate behind me eating my lightning mines.

P.S. Thanks for the suggestions, franz. Keep 'em coming. I wouldn't rely on the search feature that much. Just look at the sticky topics. I'm posting your suggestions related to the HUD on my HUD Improvements List.

It would be spooky to swing all 360 degrees around, and never see your ship, but that's what you can do with mouselook on. It would be nice to be able to change your camera, but I wouldn't call it realistic necessarily. Different camera views on your ship would make sense though, which is why I support this thread over the other strikingly similar, recently suggested one.
Jun 18, 2007 fzuazo link
lol....It's called a radar.

Cars had rear and side view mirrors because they didn't have radars.

If the red dot is on the right side of the screen then he is behind you and you should be careful.

If you REALLY REALLY want to see behind your ship that bad theb just hit 'tab' pan the camera to the rear and then when you are done just pan the camera back and align it with the reticle.

Case closed.

Don't believe we are discussing the merits of having a radar as much as having the ability to look around your cockpit. When driving a car you can look out of your drivers side or passengers window and see the view. Heck some cars even have a sun roof that lets you look up. I know when I'm backing up I turn my head around and look out my rear window. Heck take a look at the space shuttle, it has windows all over it. Do windows not exist in the world of VO?

I'm not sure why requesting more views gets an angry response. Seems pretty narrow minded not to include more immersion into the game.
Jun 18, 2007 cfranz link
I'm really, stupid, and a total newbie to this game. But IMHO, asking for more than one view has nothing to do with the combat model. It adds something I call 'situational awareness', and has nothing to do with the radar. To come back to Taljin's analogy, you *do* look out of the sides, and rearview mirror when you drive a car. When driving backwards (e.g. for parking) I even use the backward window directly. Now, I've been made aware that I can 'mouselook' and have pretty much a similar result. The point, however, is that I would very much like to have this view quickly, and comfortably. I now see that this may be too radical for real pilots, as they do it the old-school way. But then, my car also has automatic transission, and I *like* the comfort. Perhaps that is why some people think it's so bad?

I'd also welcome if we could discuss this issue without questioning each others heritage or upbringing, as I don't feel that it adds anything to the discussion.
Jun 18, 2007 Dr. Lecter link
It's not a car. Look at the models for most ships: you'll see that it would be impossible for a pilot to look back as you assume. In some, perhaps it might work (Valk, Cent) and in those a look back feature would be a nice perk.

Umm, I always wanted an optional module that'd float on the HUD and show you what was behind you, kind of a rear-view mirror. Plus, people have wanted bindable "look" parameters, for joystick hat-switch use, for years. Neither of these are bad, although yes, they have been suggested previously.

Yes, we have the radar and other things, but that doesn't mean there isn't plenty of room for improvement. Anyway, welcome aboard cfranz.

As far as a 'realism' thing goes... well, if I were designing a huge spaceship, I would put a high-tech camera that didn't use horribly fragile lenses on the back so that when people were backing up those huge ships, they could aim it with some measure of usefulness. If they wound up using this to see what was chasing them and shooting them, well, that'd be their problem.
Jun 18, 2007 incarnate link
The whole concept of our "cockpits" in game is supposed to be virtualized anyway. Basically sensors that transmit data to an interface that the pilot wears.. or in the case of some with serco mods, directly into their brain.
Jun 18, 2007 SilentWave link
Are you saying the player is not really supposed to be in his ship at any point? That these are remote-controlled devices?
Jun 18, 2007 Dr. Lecter link
That's long been an explanation for the whole Space Quake death model mixed with an alleged RPG, yeah.
