Unaligned Convoy of DOOM!

Here's the pitch:

Throw out the current random spawning of unbots. It's really annoying.

A huge convoy of unbots originates in Odia every few hours or so, and progresses alternately towards Itani or Serco space, killing everything in its path. At each WH it passes, it drops 25% or so of its forces to 'liberate' cargo that passes that area, and then the rest of the convoy proceeds onward. Eventually, it reaches nation space and engages with the local SF in a battle to the death.

So the unbots would have a pattern in their spawning, so players could erradicate them all at once rather than a few every minute, and know that the sector would be safe. It'd also have more unnies as you progress towards the center of gray space, giving the feel of an empire.

A trident and/or teradon could also accompany the convoy. Any players on the liberation mission could follow the convoy, using the trident to repair and to deposit liberated cargo for a monetary and standing boost.

Stuff that could be implemented further on:

What this could eventually evolve into is a border war between nation space and gray space.

IE: Every week, an extremely bloated Unaligned convoy (size could depend on the week's liberated cargo and money from those who pay) with an HAC and a few mini-cappies spawns and heads towards nation space. A similar force from either nation would be waiting at the border, with size relying on current economics (make CtC worth something again?).

If the Unnies manage to defeat the nation, they gain control of the sector and/or station, and the system becomes gray on the universal map until the remaining forces from the battle are destroyed. Next week, the battle is furthered to the next system, and if the nation prevails, it can attempt to take back its former territory.

As gray expands, the convoy will drop off more forces, making it smaller as it reaches nation space, and creating a natural equilibrium. The unbots would have an important role in the universe, rather than just the nuisance they are now. Players would aid or destroy unbots for a purpose.

Good idea, but there should be more than one fleet, I think:

Sorry fooz, *stamp of disapproval (on initial idea)*. Pirates should NEVER have something so large as a HAC and should NEVER be so powerful as to be able to change any borders. Greyspace is not a nation, it is simply space no nation has claimed; it should never expand in any way other than through exploration.

However, I agree multiple pirate convoys would be cool. They could occasionally stop by a Corvus station (maybe Corvus Hold specifically?) to trade in their loot for repairs/supplies, new crew, and new fighter craft (no pirate convoy should have more than a single cappy).

Technicly, Pirates SHOULD have stuff big enough to kill HAC'S, but it would be TOP TOP SERCRET.

Really, I think the pirate stuff should be moved up to mission strings as the only way to increse pirate faction.

Well, I really can't picture unaligned pirates all working together to take control of nation space, they'd all end up killing each other. I can see it happening with the hive, though.
Aug 15, 2006 LostCommander link
No, zamzx zik, pirates should never be able to take down a HAC - that is why they are PIRATES. They don't cooperate enough to be organized enough to build the necessary infrastructure to produce such equipment, let alone cooperate in using it. Even if a pirate had a small fleet at his command, he wouldn't try to take on a first or second rate British man of war (the warship).
Aug 15, 2006 zamzx zik link
Dont be silly, corvus is exactly that; Pirates working togeather. And, stupid, why would the pirates want to take down the warship? there's no profit in that, unless it was guarding a big hulking pile of treasure...or tradeships.

And I was saying that courvus would most likely have at least one of their own friggys out there. Period.

momerath42 -- "Corvus is a corporation, not a pirate guild. They don't *officially* support or condone such behavior."

Corvus is exactly not that; they are more like 1920's Sicily mafia who happen to be very lax about who they service at their stations. Corvus couldn't have one of their capital ships out there (at least not identified as such) because then there would be clear evidence linking them to the crimes; also, if a pirate HAC appeared, there would be many heavily investigated questions as to its origin. Can you imagine what would happen today if suddenly Vietnamese pirates started using a modern AGEIS cruiser, or even a WWII battleship?

I like it all except for the pirates attacking nation space. There's no reason for them to do so. I also agree that the shouldn't have a HAC.

Well, umm, pirates already do have (had) a convoy.

... Observe.
Aug 16, 2006 moldyman link
Indeed. We downed it over a week ago.
Aug 16, 2006 zamzx zik link
Of course they shouldn't have HAC's *rollseyes*

They have their own secret ship that you wouldn't know about until really far in the mission string (or you happen to catch a glance) Simply 'cuz, fighters cannot take down a frigate easily, and you need a lot of them, they would have a frigate just 'cuz everyone else does, in case they needed major defence from the hive and such. It would be a unique piece, obiviously..

Oh, and like erin noted, they'd have a few pirated ships.
Aug 16, 2006 LostCommander link
Pirates wouldn't need defences from the Hive. They don't exactly live anywhere; they can simply find haven with Corvus. Thus, they would have no reason to have (and likely couldn't afford) any super secret uber-awesome capital ships. They might have some super secret nifty technology, and POSSIBLY (really stretching here) a secret fighter that comes equipped with said technology as standard.
Aug 16, 2006 zamzx zik link
How would corvus protect them? the hive is supposed to be strong, and conquring, without major defences, such as a large amount of turrets/ships or a few big ships, corvus would be screwed by the first major hive strike.

And they could afford it, they do after all, run the black market. Period, they'd have a few, some pirated, some slapped togeather, some scavenged.

My Comment -- Momerath's Comment
Corvus IS/ARE NOT PIRATE(S)!!!

Corvus would have big capital ships. Corvus would defend itself (and those in its stations) from the Hive.
Also, it is likely that after fighting off a couple of Hive incursions, Corvus may be marked by the Hive as an inefficient measn of expansion and, further, not a threat to other expansion as Corvus does limited mining.

Thus, pirates would probably operate out of Tridents and MIGHT have a Teradon, but you would never see more than 2-3 pirate cappies at a time, and they would likely be a safe ways off (if not in another empty sector entirely).

I wouldn't mind the pirates haveing a bunch of capships. Could be something somehow along the lines of the Turanic Raiders in Homeworld.

They had at least one carrier sized ship that looked like a lump of junk pieced together but was still extremely powerful and armed to the teeth, which was their mobile base.
They also produced simpler capships that weren't terribly tough but looked damn cool.

Make-shit-up-time! Why shouldn't there be ultra wealthy warlords + follows who can finance a small fleet like the raiders above? They gained their wealth through piracy, by doing the dirty jobs for corvus and other factions and some luck :P. Thus slowly grew out of the unalightned masses.

There were even a few real world examples of something like that like:

And since has mommerath become the expert on the game, eh? Ok, great, corvus is a corperation, but that doesn't rub with what is ingame now. So either their corperation stations move, and we get a complete pirate faction, or corvus somehow is linked to pirate activitys. Right now, corvus is ONLY in pirate space, and the blackmarket and all pirate activitys are linked to their station. Currently, corvus obviously supports (or simply profits from) pirate activitys.

Yar, spucky, exactly.
Aug 16, 2006 LostCommander link
Sweet, Mr. Spuck, I think I linked to Sir Henry Morgan somewhere else around here recently. LOL. I was thinking it would be good to start all these suggested pirate groups off small and let them buy stuff (including new cappies) as they succeeded. Maybe spawn a new one from Corvus Hold once a day if there are less than 4 groups?
Aug 16, 2006 Suicidal Lemming link
There is no pirate space in vendetta. Gray space is territory that is not claimed by the UIT, Serco, or Itani.
I would doubt that pirates would either have or make use of ships that can take down a HAC. A HAC would be owned by any of the nations or a major faction, destroying it would clearly result in a major retaliation from the faction and it's allies.
