Its the biggest pain in the backside there is, and if someone wants to die to travel home fast, then can ram the station, or a station guard, or shoot something in a NFZ, or offer me a free kill, I will be sure to respond :)
But someone who attacks you, and then /explodes because they realise there health just drops is lame, but yet its allowed by the game (IIRC) because people used to get stuck in weird places, or having to go AFK in a sector and ending up two hours from a station or worm hole, well, this doesnt apply now, you can warp to an empty sector, and even after flying three days in a straight line, I could still warp/be warped, I just didnt end up where I was supposed to go.
Why do we have /explode now ? Only reason I can think of is to deny an attacker a kill, but what if they attacked you?

NO! just um...make it like a guide thingy (IF you have to take it at all) so only alpha players can have it. I love /explode (telling noobs or type /explode "name")
'sides if they ever put "player who gets most dmg into target gets % of exp" then it will all be good.

/explode does not need to be removed.
if your oponent uses it to deny you the kill deal with it. some may concider it an underhanded tactic, other sconcider it more honerable.
personaly i don't see the point either way the looser dies and the winer wins. if you realy want the kill or XP then finde a way to kill the before they can initiate a /explode (easier said than done if they have a binde)

I agree with Yoda...
i agree with lord q
/exploding is damn fun

we just need a no move 10 second counter on it like the log off then you can use it if you get stuck but it won't work in combat.
I suggest replacing /explode with a 10 second countdown and a much larger explosion. That makes it no longer an "escape from a duel" thing, but does offer the tactical possibility of your ship as a weapon...
i have no problem with a 10 second countdown, but strongly believe that /explode should be left in-game.
So you can duck out of giving kills in BP?
Until capturing a ship has meaning, destroying your own ship like this should be disallowed. Denying an enemy a kill by /exploding is probably the only way I can think of that is actually dishonorable. The only thing it does is take away that PK - and if you're on a mission where PKs count, it breaks the game.
If you want to travel between two places, ram a station. If you want to deny someone else a kill by killing yourself, you're in the wrong game. I don't know how you can build a PvP game where PKs matter and allow people to duck out of PKs. It serves absolutely no RP purpose.
Especially in a "skill based" twitch game. What /explode does is introduce a spell that gives you a 100% chance to screw the other guy.
If someone can come up with a valid RP reason to /explode, please tell us. There are no valid gameplay reasons.
It's also impossible to kill someone if they have an /explode bind and are willing to use it, unless you get a lucky lag break or they cut it too close.

I agree with yoda too. It's kind of pointless these days unless you're either using it to travel easily, denying someone a kill or, very rarely, kamikazeing someone.
Those first two reasons are the most common and the first is funny, the other is just annoying. Some pilots will continually attack, start to lose and then /explode just to deny the other pilot the kill. If you get in over your head, run away, but /exploding is not a reasonable answer.
For those who truly can pull of a kamikaze, then full credit, however only one person has pulled it off against me. Everyone else has just used it as an excuse.
"Oh yeah. I exploded because I was trying to kamikaze you"
"Errmm I was at 80% health. Now I'm at 75& health"
I also like the idea of a 10sec countdown during which you can't do anything but I'd be concerned about abuse if it had a much larger boom with it.

I think it should be left in the game. 5 sec timer would be good.
i said it before, and i still stand by it, /explode must be removed. Its a bad thing for a pvp drivin game. Denying someone a kill is just low, and shows of no respect at all. Drop it!
if you dont like someone /explode ing, dont fight them. its that simple
How do you know they're going to /explode? How do you keep /exploders from taking missions where them being killed matters to the mission?
You all have nothing better to do so you complain about another NON-ISSUE.
This does not need to be removed. Self Destruction is something that should always be an option. I'd rather see a timer then it removed, but I'd rather see nothing at all done then a timer.

There's nothing wrong with a a ship having a self-destruct sequence.
But there should be a delay on it.
And pilots should get ejected in some kind of tiny escape pod wich they have to (slowly) fly back to a station. The teleport thing annoys me a bit.
This way, there'd be a real cost at loosing your ship.

10-second timer seems best, and during it, your ship's systems shut down. At 7 seconds no turbo, 5 no weapons, 3 no movement at all.
10 second countdown has my vote, too. Visual indicator that you're going to explode would be nice, and other limitations (no turbo, no weapons, etc.) would be OK w/ me, but possibly unnecessary.
In the last thread on this topic, I suggested having your engine glow increase as the timer went up, signifying that your engines were overloading.
This is something that happened to me in BP.
A Serco and I got into a fight, and when he was almost dead he /exploded, I ask him why and he replies "Because I will not die at the hands of a traitor!!"
In the next 6-7 fights we had I managed to kill him 2-4 times before he /exploded.
It was a perfectly good RP reason why to self-destruct, but the thing that bugs me is that he KNEW that I was a better pilot and would kill him and yet he keeped attacking me, then /explodes to rob me of his kill.
I'm fine with /explode IF you use it for the right reasons, though I think it should have a timer.
