warning of being targetted

from my mtrek days... if a different ship has targetted your ship, you should be warned via the message console. in real jet fighters, pilots are alerted to the fact that they are being tracked and targetted by enemy fighters and radar stations. mtrek had this feature in which a symbol was placed next to the name of the ship that was currenty tracking you. you could derive that this person was interested in either attacking you or just curious. at that point, you could message him if he was hostile or not.

on the radar scope, if a shape has a circle around it, then you are tracking the ship. if a ship has a blinking circle, then that ship is tracking you. when the tracking is first initiated, a message should appear on the message portion of the screen.

what a great idea!

if an AI is shooting at you, would he be blinking too?

unless the pilot of the ship is very good, then he will acquire you as a target before firing. this may be useful when the person is firing his laser or ion cannon at you, but how about when firing missiles. should the firing ship's dot blink only when the missiles are fired? should the firing ship's dot blink if the the missiles are still tracking you?

i offer these suggestions as suggestions because i am not involved in the development of vendetta.

not always do they aquire you as a target before fireing. most times its a rocket hitting you which doesnt need a targeter, and neither do heat-seekers. the only good for it is homing missles and swarms which dont do much but annoy you.

Howabout normal "enemy" ships show up as blue on the radar (Yes I know our rockets will be changed, but oh well), and once they "acquire a lock" they switch to red. Lasers/ions cannot be fired without a lock.... suggestions on rockets?

good idea. this will help determine which non friendly ship are hostile or non hostile. if AI ships are not interested in attacking, then they should not target. in the same token, enemy ships that are not interested in a fight should not keep the ship targetted for a long period of time. if they do, this will invite the ship to target them. then the duel begins.

the scenario could be played out like the following:

ship A jumps into sector 5 and targets an enemy ship B.

ship A holds target and is getting closer (slowly) to Ship B.

ship B chats: "unless you want to die, stop targetting me, ship A" (ship to ship chatting should be a little easier to do from the main screen. i think it is only possible in auto fligth mode. correct me if i'm wrong.)

ship A drops targetting and replies: "sorry B" OR

ship A holds target, increases speed and replies: "bring it on"

Daehan: No offense, but it doesnt happen like that.
If someone like charlie manson or icarus is on your tail. Then i think it would be fair to say that ship B would be dead after he said his warning piece.

Generally when you have played the game alot, you will learn when people are going to be hostile to you or not. Sometimes you could get it wrong and end up having your @rse whoop'd or someone chasing you for the next 20minutes after revenge.

I think its fine the way it is. Being on your toes and having to look over your sholder in combat. Avoiding everyone and everything incase they're hostile, brings reallity to the game.Wheres the fun in knowing when everything is going to happen to you? I think you have been playing mech warriors too long. Some people get too used to the idea of playing easy games, or using the cheats all the time.(No offense).

At present as mentioned b4 your radar bleeps when you have been shot at by a missle. Rockets dont bleep, Why? Because they dont lock on. They are fired in a straight line. Missiles, swarms, seekers, they all lock on to your ship. Lasers and ions dont lock on either? - It makes sense.

My advice = Learn to dodge and enjoy a challenge :)

White Magic.

BoxCar... please stop with the mass threadomancy.

i think it would be nice to know who has me targeted. it wouln't take any sence of danger out of the game as: you can fire weapons without a target selected, targeting is often done just to determine more about the targeted ship or to send a hail, etc.

It would be nice for it to auto target on the person who targeted you, supposing that you have no target.
Or just a blinking red something at the top right of your screen.
Or multiple colored blinking things for when mass ppl want to kill you.

I remember reading this thread back in the day...and I thought it was rather silly. Perhaps a fire indicator for when people start firing, or have you in their autoaim scope. Dunno.

Ehh, I think it would be more useful if there was a tiny little box somewhere on the HUD, showing a list of all pilots in the sector capable of damaging you, their proximity to you, and a little star or something would appear next to the name if they had you targeted.

I'm not saying I necessarily want that, I'm just saying it would be better. It might be interesting to try out, but I think something like that would be better as a badge reward or something.

Yes, a monitoring list would be good. Of all the PCs of opposite nations, and things.

Why not have the targeting indicator be a ring around their radar blip.
1. Solid White Ring - Player is targeting you
2. Alternating Red and White Ring - Player is firing weapons while targeting you.
3. Red Flashing Ring - Player has fired while targeting you, but is not targeting you now (status remains until player leaves the sector)
4. Solid Yellow Ring - You are targeting player.

So here's my rationale. Rather than adding a bunch of new radar IFF colors, just keep the ones we have and add stuff TO them. The white ring only lasts while a player targets you. If they fire at any time while targeting you, they get a red flashing ring (that alternates white and red). If they fired while targeting you, but aren't targeting you now then the white ring is removed and only a red flashing ring is left. This is useful in fights involving many people. And of course, ships you're targeting get a yellow ring so you can differentiate your target from all other people targeting you.

Of course, you'll always have people who'll try to beat you without having targeted you, but if they get the kill, they really deserve it. Otherwise, you'll at least have some notion of who could possibly attack before they really do.

haha, fear the necromancer...

didn't I mention at one point the possibility of instead having a targeting method that targets the nearest person to have you targeted?
Feb 10, 2006 Phaserlight link
the only way this would be useful is if there were a way to 'power down' your weapons with a master safe switch, and the warning only sounded if you were being targeted with 'hot' weapons. Otherwise you would be getting warnings every five seconds. The original suggestion was not very well thought through imho.

Phaserlight,

while that would be signifigantly better, i'd personaly like to know if a certain player has me targeted. becuase if they do i can't sneek up on them due to the range indicator. However if they don't have me targeted and are looking away i may be able to sneek in a bit closer.

CP's idea seems to be the best of all sugested though

yeah, simply indicator if they have you targetted, probably a ring around the dot slightly smaller than the one for when you target them.
