Roleplaying Support Group

Jul 01, 2006 Gavan link
I was thinking that it might be neat to get a sort of support group together for roleplaying (because, c'mon, at the best of times we all need a dusty dose of Valium....no?). A place where one could rely on those involved to provide constructive feedback/proofreading for and from others in the VO community who might:

a) have insight into the RP you would like to pursue
b) have fantastic story telling skills (which many subkids have)
c) have some technical literature skills worth offering.

gimick(minus the "k")at.telus.net (just to start things off. if they don't inevitably get better from here.... its a doomed idea)

I'll volunteer.

Leebs: "Hi, I'm LeberMac..."
Crowd: "Hi LeberMac, thanks for coming..."
Leebs: "I have gone without roleplaying for exactly 3 days and 12 hours..."
Crowd: <smattering of applause>

i think this is a great idea... it allows us to separate ourselves without losing touch with the VO world.

the only suggestion i would like to make, is NO CORRECTING SPELLING OR GRAMMER, we are looking for kindness, not english teachers.

jex, dont even think about it.

Miharu is the one you have to worry about, aka Grammar Nazi. When my ISP comes back from being down (again), I'd be interested.

No correcting spelling or grammar, ok. BUT use a spellchecker, for the love of Lady Serco. You don't understand the mental anguish you cause some people. (I actually cringe at some errors, but that's in German, not in English).

Since I'm not that good at RPing, I could be technical advisor on spacefaring technology and... cyborgs. Mwahaha.

I'd be tempted to grammar nazi, if I were interested in this idea at all. In my experience such groups don't work, but it could have been because I was in them, so I'll pass and if you guys actually succeed, then we'll know for sure :P

Sounds interesting, and I'm willing to hold off on correcting poor grammar and spelling unless it's really clear the person has no idea what the fuck they're doing.1 In that case I reserve the right to set them straight.2

[rant="spelling and grammar"]However, as toshiro said, it is EXTREMELY difficult to read some posts on this forum without gagging/cringing/wanting to shoot yourself because of the horrible horrible spelling errors some people make. Spelling errors make your writing hard to read, and the more of them and the worse they are, the harder it is to read what you write. Same goes for grammar. I make my spelling/grammar corrections for the sake of making your (and mine, too, if I make a correction that turns out to be false and am proved to be wrong) writing easier to read. Not, as some people think, to harass and ridicule. Sure, it might come off that way to some, but when u misspell wurds liek "you", "like" and "words" it's a little hard NOT to call you on it.

I try to lay off the people who don't speak English natively because they've got a very good reason for having poor spelling/grammar: They simply don't know. However, people who DO speak English natively who make errors that they shouldn't at their age (which for most people is assumed to be over 13, VO being a Teen-rated game by the ESRB) are spared no mercy when it becomes extremely difficult to decipher what they are saying.[/rant]

I personally specialize in spelling and grammar checks when editing the work of other writers, as I often lack the time to read carefully enough to go into plot/character development, setting, dialogue, etc. etc. When I roleplay with someone often enough, though, the things I don't get to look at in writing I usually get to see/observe/comment on by other methods.

So... to sum it up, I'm in. Give me something to do already.

1 I define this as making errors that someone who has graduated from an equivalent of junior high wouldn't make. "AOLspeek" is included in the things that will make it clear.
2 Note: I might be joking, I might not. It'll depend on my mood.

Ok, so... why do people generally feel that correcting someone's spelling/grammar is bad?

Personally, poor spelling and grammar absolutely kills an RP for me. Kind of like watching a movie, then all of a sudden you can see the shitty special effects.

The only reason I can see why correcting such things would be bad would be in:

a) Dialogue

or

b) It's written in a certain grammatical style for stylistic effect.

Please enlighten me.

Otherwise, post your contact info and I'll add it to the first post.

Mi gramah is kool, I leik ti. adn teher aint nuthin u can do bout ti.

As one of the worst typists ingame, I don't care much for grammer nazis, but I also don't get offended when someone points out a mistake. I do however feel upset when people use bad spelling/type-o's to make someone feel small, or themselfs feel better.

And as for the actual topic, I suck at RP, heh.

I think it's rather delusional to think that the "roleplayers" have yet to lose touch with the rest of VO.

Ghost, that might lead to leber needing an entirely different support group.
Jul 10, 2006 LeberMac link
Yeah, I'd need a support group for people with too many support groups.
