Any chess players on VO? I'm just interested 'cause I play chess and I wanted to know..

I play very occasionally. I'll play with kids who want to learn how to play, but I generally lose to adults who are dedicated to the game.

Yes, I play. I have a pretty good grasp of fundamentals, but am nothing special. I was fortunate enough to be taught by my dad around age 8 or so; I still remember the first time I beat him.

Right now, 'Chess' to me means watching lots of games to improve rote memory, playing against my brother once in a while, or online once in a blue moon.

It's a very good game. Chess 2 I also found to be a lot of fun; a nice permutation.

"chess" must be a very nerdy game if only moderators bothered to respond so far.

I take it you are not familiar, which reveals an unfortunate gap in your education. I like games, and chess seems to have stood the test of time as a strategy game. I'm interested enough to teach it to somebody new and get them proficient, but not interested enough to seek out a game for the hell of it.

I'm a chess novice, but I'm a fan of strategy games and have been on a mission lately to become more well versed in middle game strategies. If be up for a game online if it can be played through either an android or Linux compatible service.

If I commented on someone else's intelligence level even only vaguely, you would certainly moderate it and thread-mute me.

Now you're doing it to me. How professional and objective of you!

No, I'm not offended. I wouldn't submit a ticket about this. I just find it interesting and noteworthy.

He didn't comment on your intelligence levels, rather your lack of chess education. But yea, be the guy no one likes. You seem to enjoy embracing that role.

JJ: I think we could make a better case that your comment implied that Phaser and I are nerdy. I guess I could have deleted your rude and unnecessary comment outright and thread muted you, but that seemed a bit much given that we have thicker skins than the average user. It's a good thing I don't use the same measure that is applied to me, right?

SO back to chess, I guess I don't like it because I don't feel there's much room to innovate. It's all been done centuries before and there's no adventure in it for me. Teaching somebody to be good enough to defeat me is fun, but sitting and plotting in silence for long periods of time is not.

Rude? Assuming the worst is another of your tendencies, whistler.

I was calling you sexy for playing chess.

No you weren't. You were, in fact, trying to belittle the game of chess, the OP, and the mods. Now that you've been called on it, you're trying to play the victim. Pathetic.

I regret to inform you that you're not as good at reading people as you think you are, pizza. Yes, "nerdy" traditionally has a negative connotation to it, however recently it's taken on a positive meaning. How do you know that I wasn't using the more modern meaning of "nerdy" all along?

Anyway, let's talk about chess. CHESS! I won chess tournaments in high school. I don't play it much anymore, but I do play casually from time to time. I disagree that there's no room to innovate. Grandmasters are always finding new ways to play opening lines previously thought to be inferior or inaccurate. After the first move on both sides, there are 400 possible positions. By move 6, there are 9,132,484 possible positions. The number increases exponentially.

I liked chess too, and played back in the day. However I remember there was this one kid in school who kept flicking people's pieces off the board and the adjudicators kept telling him to stop or he'd be banned from participating. He never did stop but they never banned him. Chess wasn't very popular after that....

Point 1: Why did JJ transform my thread into a fight center? Grrr...
Point 2: I never knew there were so many chess players. Even Whistler? This is actually great! :D. I play at chess.com going by the name of keshavman . I might not be found a lot, but if you search on the times when I'm in, like now, I'll come in for a game.

Why "Even Whistler?" ?

I don't get it, how joylessjoker made a fight scene out of one simple question?
Shoulda not ask "Any chess players on VO?" And shoulda not say nerd and chess in the same sentence...

To the topic: I've played chess a lot when I was 20 years younger. I would like to fresh some memories...

Don't look at me. I made a thoughtful, sweet compliment and I was sorely misunderstood. Some people have a tendency to take things the worst way possible!

Hah. The people who said "chess is nerdy!" are the same ones who used to laugh back in the school days when someone was reading a book. I never respected nor took these people seriously. I never paid attention to them eitther, but that may just be because they dropped out of school in grade 8. Hehe.

Anyway. I like to play a match or two once in a while, though it happens seldomly as rarely someone carries a chessboard with them. When I play, I am a decent player, but nowehere near the experts in tournaments. It's crazy how those people play. Watching a chess-tournament is not as boring as you may think...
