Best messenger utility by far is Adium

I'd go with either safari or Firefox for the browser... it just depends on which sites support which browser. I run both depending on need.

p2p... limewire's nice... but I've heard there are better ones.

Safari works really well for me. of the sites I visit, only my employer's internal web sites sometimes have issues and then I resort to FireFox.

I've been using iChat exclusivelly as well for both AIM and Jabber access (Jabber being the network used by my employer's internal IM tools)

Peer2Peer, I dont use that much. I have very strict rules for myself about this so whatever I share that requires p2p is usually public or personal data. BitTorrent works fine for me in this case.

Things you probably MUST have is DIVXDoctor II wich will fix up AVI and DIVX files (among others) so that they properly play with QuickTime. GraphicsConverter is a good image editing tool that handles more file format you ever thought existed (including medical-specific formats).

Regardless of the apps you may think you need, the very best address to find stuff is versiontracker.com. it's a damn good repository of public, shareware and commercial apps with comments and usefulness scores. Excellent search capabilities.

FYI, versiontracker also had Windows and Palm entries in there.

Oh. And Vendetta Online is pretty good too :-)

lol ^^

I am using Adium for MSN and AIM. But if i need to video chat i use iChat since Adium i do not feel it is worthy enough to take the strain (or it can't). I mainly use Safari although i will use FireFox if Safari won't open it.

P2P? I used LimeWire Before but now i have stopped...(since it is no iligal and i don't wanna get caught) and i now just use BitTorrent for the occasinal thing.

This'll probably get moved to Mac forum, but here goes:

I just re-discovered Adium after using Fire for an IM client over the last few years. I love it. Adium all the way for IM chat on a Mac.

Browser: Firefox. Safari's implementation of java breaks some websites. Firefox pulls up every website I've ever needed to see.

P2P: Limewire. I don't do much with this anymore. But I still have Limewire installed.

Other kickass apps I recommend:

FTP utility: Panic Software's excellent Transmit. (Actually just go buy everything that Panic makes, they rock.)

Search function to replace Spotlight on OS X 10.4.4: EasyFind by DEVONtechnologies. MUCH better than Spotlight. MUCH.

Safari has never been a problem for me.
AIM for the IM needs.
I used Limewire and BitTorrent for p2p before I found out that they were destroying my 350mhz processor. Limewire is good for music, while BitTorrent is better for movies, tv shows, etc. I used Azureus as my Torrent client.

Safari. Sometimes Shiira, on rare occasions I use Firefox.

Messenging: Used Fire, but then again I don't msg much... IRC is what I like.

P2P: BitTorrent (Tomato Torrent Client). Other P2P: none, used Carracho (ftp client) earlier... until it got swarmed with leechers.

For a browser? I'd suggest Firefox or Safari. ^.^ Aim for messaging, or even ICQ.

iChat for AIM, ICQ, ichat and MSN

Safari and sometimes Firefox

BitTorrent.

P2P, XFactor - www.xfactor.cc for gnutella/kazaa etc, and Transmission for bittorrents.
transmission is MUCH better than the standard bittorrent client, I find its much faster and more reliable.
the others are the same as everyone else

for an app that i cant live without would be desktop manager (http://desktopmanager.berlios.de/) basically gives you a bunch of virtual desktops that you can move through using simple key commands. Makes having a laptop with a small screen much easier to live with.

Browser: Safari/Camino/Firefox

IM: Adium (The BEST no matter what anyone says)

P2P: Acquisition, and Azereus for BitTorrent.

First off, I have moved this to off-topic.

Browsers:
Omniweb, costs $30 but people seem to like it.
http://www.omnigroup.com/applications/omniweb/

I currently use Shiira.
http://hmdt-web.net/shiira/en

Camino is also a nice web browser.
http://www.caminobrowser.org/

Adium is the best instant messanger program out there.

Other applications I like:
Quicksilver is a bit like spotlight, but much better to use as an application launcher. The site was down when I posted this, but be sure to check it out when it goes back up.
http://quicksilver.blacktree.com/

I use iScroll to make the trackpad act like a scroll wheel.
http://www-users.kawo2.rwth-aachen.de/~razzfazz/iscroll2/

Cyberduck is a very nice free FTP client.
http://cyberduck.ch/

Growl is a notification system for applications that support it.
http://growl.info/

For a very good text editor I use TextMate.
http://macromates.com/

Transmission is a very good light weight bittorrent client.
http://transmission.m0k.org/

coconutBattery tells you what condition your battery is in. (Woo, 99%)

Lem, transmission works for you? It crashed on me... It's odd, first Azureus, then Transmission. The only client that really works flawlessly for me is Tomato...

I'm using 0.3 if that matters.

GRAIG, yeah, VersionTracker isn't especially fast (it serves a lot of people). But since they dont host the files (ratter, they link to them), it wont affect your download.

Best Internet browser is Microsoft Internet Explorer. Make sure it's version 4.0 or below, though. Later versions are buggy and slow, and run under Carbon, which is really slow.

Best e-mail client is Microsoft Outlook Express. Again, stay away from new versions.

Best instant messenger is AOL Instant Messenger. It's illegal to use any of those other clients on AOL's propriatery, secret, network. Also, using other IM networks is illegal. Using open-source protocols or clients is highly illegal, It's all in the PATRIOT Act.

For Peer to Peer software, I reccommend VMWare with a copy of Limewire running under Windows 98. That ensures maximum download speed and compatibility with downloaded software.
